I like a friend

2020.10.25 23:25 blickystickyuh69 I like a friend

So about 2 months ago, my bestfriend (f) moved into a rent house with 2 other girls. I hang out with my bestfriend at said house all the time and i eventually started to have a physical relationship with one of her cute roomates that i have know prior to them moving into the rent house. It has gotten to the point where i was spending the night 5 days out of the week. Well to get to the point she is currently in portland oregon for a week seeing one of her ex boyfriends from highschool. this trip was made prior to the start of our physical arrangement, it was meant to re-kindle things and she had plans to sleep with him; but she told me that she wouldn’t do anything because of our situtation. we also told eachother that it was casual but i realize now that i have strong feelings for her but i don’t want to date. i can’t sleep at night or can’t help myself thinking that she is falling for him again, or sleeping with him. i know i can’t be mad at her for this, because we decided to keep things casual but this shit just hurts. i don’t have someone who will listen to the way i feel either so it goes to reddit.
update: she uploaded a bunch of pictures today. seems like they are having a lot of fun. been sober for 25 days. breaking sobriety tonight and crying.

2020.10.23 05:42 DogNail Edited - partners mom accused me of cheating.

I guess Im going to sleep with all the medical staff and have orgies. Had to repost due to previous post “locking”. Thank you everyone.
In 2019 my parter was staying with his mother for the week. When he got back to our house he told me he had a conversation with his mother. He said it was one sided and the mother did most of the talking.
He (SO) said his mother talked to him about “people in the medical field and doctors sleep around with each other”. She explained how I’m only using her son to get through medical school and I will leave him after graduating. She also said I’m pursuing medicine for the money. She further explained my social media is “annoying” and I “talk weird”.
All of this is fabricated and I’ve never had issues with my partner of 7 years. We trust each other and rarely argue. However, this caused a HUGE argument. I felt he did not honor me or stand up for me, which he later fixed by called his mother and establishing boundaries. However, this did cause a break up and a lot of emotions and I can’t help but see him differently.
I’ve asked the mother to speak to me several times and explain why she feels so badly about me. However, she just ignores me and belittles me by saying more hurtful things like “you need to know your place, you are trying to take him away, etc”.
I tried to visit the family for the holidays in 2019. I just ignored her and politely smiled. However, I was later told by my partner that she “thought my smile was rude and instead a disrespectful smirk”.
I set boundaries and told her to only speak to me in regards to her son. Haven’t spoken to her for over a year, it’s been so calming and feels great. I’d love to never speak to her again but that’s not possible.
I’m visiting for the holidays in 2020 and really DONOT want to waist my day trying to navigate her “acceptance” because no matter how I dress, talk, act or smile. She will always find something to dislike about me. What should I do?
EDIT:
Below is my conversation with the mother via FB. My apologies I could not figure out a different format to upload the conversation. From his recollection his mothers "red flag" was within the first two year of us dating (I was in undergraduate school). His mother asked if I wanted to get married, I responded with I don't see myself with one person. I was being honest and at the time I was under the impression I would be moving states to pursue an education, so my relationship "lasting" was not my exception. That is the only "red flag" I'm aware of. Full disclosure I did make a snarky remark after this conversation via text I said "please do not contact me unless it is about your son or orgies".
ME: I don't know why calling me cheater and a user is ever ok. Especially without imperial evidence. The issues you have with me should have been addressed directly to me. We have coexisted before with consideration for each other. We both love (SO name) and for his mental and physical health I never spoke ill of you. But you did not extent the same curtesy. It breaks my heart to have someone think such evil and terrible things of me. Especially when they are solely based on small verbal interactions.
HER: First off, I did not call you a user or a cheater. I drew conclusions based on first-hand experiences I have had with you, that leave me baffled and very uneasy. I haven't said a word for a very long time and I felt it was time to do so. There is a difference between allegations and conclusions. You have raised red flags with me and I wanted (SO name) to know what you've said to me and what I have observed because I love him. I question your values and principles, only because you are with my son. If you were not with my son, it wouldn't make a difference at all to me. I do not owe you a conversation. You know what you've said as well as I. I trust and love my son and I will always have "his back". You for whatever reason even have a hard time with him spending time with his family, that is not new, and that is selfish not love. We all love (SO name) very much and we will all always honor his choices regardless of any personal opinions we may have. You have turned this into some kind of contest and it has been blown out of proportion to the extreme on your end. I do not think evil of anyone, including you. I rarely think of you. I think about my son often. It needed to be said. It was. It is over now. People will always base their conclusions of you by what you say and by what you do or do not do. You have done this of me. If you want to be seen in a better light, then say what you mean and mean what you say and be more conscious in the things you say and do, and back (SO name) in his choices, including him spending time with those that love him the most and will forever. We are a very close knit family and we have certainly had ups and downs but we all respect each other and put our best selves forward when we are together. We make a point of reaching out and connecting. If you want to be seen a certain way then act accordingly. It's really very simple. The way you have handled all of this certainly doesn't add credibility or convince me my conclusions were in grave error. I am firm but I am not a hard person. Having said that I will do anything it takes to protect my children, even if that means letting them go.
ME: I have always encouraged him to visit. I ask you to come to Portland. I have always made an effort to come to family get-togethers. I have driven him to family and I encourage him to call everyone. To say I have "a hard time with him spending time with his family" is a lie.Furthermore, I can easily say mean things and come to terrible conclusions about you. But I don't because I have never talked to you for an extended time or spent one-on-one time. What exactly did I say to make you come to such accusation? You don't owe me a conversation. I don't owe you anything. But you should have figured out how to co-exist with me for the sake of your son's happiness. Talking negatively about anyone behind their back before speaking directly to the person you have an issue with is wrong.
HER: There are things I know that you don't know I know. I'll leave it at that. Don't ever presume to tell me that I should have figured out anything for the sake of my son's health. You have crossed the line and continue to dig in. Obviously talking to you does no good whatsoever, it just makes matter worse.
ME: I'd love to know what you know and what I did wrong to have you assault my character?
HER: It's best I don't attempt talk to you for awhile.
ME: I was just trying to resolve the issue and figure out what I did to you. I guess we won't talk.
HER: I think we both need a break. I do not appreciate the way you are talking to me now and I have tried to maintain who I am in this process. When you say things like I should have figured out anything regarding my son you overstep in a huge way. I am and I will always be his mother. I am not his friend, I am his mother. Step back.
ME: Whatever, I was simply asking you what I did. This is not about you as a mother. You and his relationship is non of my business. I just wanted to know what you said, what I don't know and why you decided this would be the best course of action.
HER: Then you also need to remember that you are speaking to his mother, and not one of his friends.
ME: Ok, so what did I do?
HER: I need time to cool off. Perhaps we will have a face to face in the future.
ME: Ok
HER: Thank you I realize this is hard for you also.In an attempt to give you a space where you can maybe relax a little or have some peace of mind until we have a face-to-face, I'd like to tell you that I am not trying to break you and (SO name) up. I have no right or idea what would ultimately make (SO name) happy, that is entirely up to him. I do not like drama, and I expect my children to handle their own if they can. What really matters is what (SO name) knows and thinks of you and visa versa - and that is it. I don't railroad my children or try to live their lives for them. It also appears that hypothetical scenarios of others' I know of that I shared with (SO name) have somehow become accusations I made of you and that is not true. Yes, I have concerns - we can talk about those sometime later if you'd like. But if you truly love (SO name), then of course I support you in your relationship. I ultimately just want my children to be happy and safe. If you will recall I have tried to help you before, with your personal safety while you were in another state. I had concerns then and it didn't stop me from jumping to help you be safe. No one is trying to hurt you or break you two up. That's all I have for now.
ME: Sounds good. just want to hear what the red flags are. I don't question your intent, I'm sure it was positive.I appreciate the gesture of having a face to face conversation. But I think our issues can be easily resolved without having a physical interaction for now.
HER: Perhaps you can just let this go. I’d sure like to not talk/think about this anymore it is an unnecessary strain. If it turns out we need to talk I won’t entertain a conversation that isn’t face to face. I’m very close to saying I’m done talking about it ever again, time to move forward...
ME: You are welcome to come to Portland and speak to me if you wish.
ME (after the visit that I "smirked"): Thank you for coexisting while visiting family. I appreciate the effort. I ask again, please refrain from talking about me and any interpretation you may have about my smile. I feel it’s best we keep our communication minimal. I want you to know I’m willing to discuss the issue at hand anytime. Happy late mother day.
His mother has reached out twice since the FB chat with "polite" message. One of them was a video of my partner playing with his niece and the other was a message stating "I feel so sad you're alone over there. Im sorry (SO name) had to go". She sent this message when my SO went out of state for a work contract.
Ive disclosed any and all interaction.
I feel strange coming onto Reddit to ask for advise. However, Im in a new state with no friend (besides classmates) and I do not want to drag my personal like into my career. I asked my grandmother and mother. However, they have VERY different opinions about the matter. I need an objective opinion. Please help because I don’t know what I did wrong and I feel I should be accountable for my action but I just don’t see what I did to make her dislike me so much.

  • The big stories this week really won’t hit until late in the issue, so read down I guess.
  • [NWA] The Midnight Rider angle lasted just a whole two weeks after his initial arrival. The whole thing began just four or five weeks back with a baseball bat and punching Magnum T.A., and all that work was wasted when they pulled the plug. The Midnight Rider gimmick just wasn’t working, so they did an official announcement that Paul Boesch convinced the NWA board to reinstate Dusty. All the panicked decisions lately leave Dave with the impression that the NWA is in worse shape than they seemed to be a few weeks back, and things don’t look likely to change any time soon. More of a surprise to Dave than the fact that it wasn’t working is the fact that they did it so quickly when the angle was supposed to last through the summer. He thinks that has to be hard on Dusty’s ego. So them setting up a feud between Dusty and Barry Windham when the logical feud should be Luger and Windham seems a desperate move to placate Dusty. And there’s no predicting what the NWA will do next, because the people in charge don’t seem to know what they’re doing week to week.
  • Ex-NFL star Steve Courson makes his pro wrestling debut this week at a Pennsylvania independent show. He’s barely trained and being rushed into the ring to capitalize off his NFL fame. The guy was a heavy steroid user back in the NFL and admitted as much, and his career ended due to health issues a couple years ago. Nevertheless, he’s got an anti-steroid book about to hit bookshelves. Seems carny enough for the business.
  • Roddy Piper showed up at Don Owen’s April 30 card in Portland. Billy Jack Haynes’ rival promotion debuted on May 7 and starts its tv program on May 14. Haynes claims he didn’t delay a week due to Piper’s April 30 appearance, but because his ring lights were late in arriving. They were lighting Chris Adams’ ring, I’m sure. Anyway, Piper showed up in the interview area and never entered the ring, and when Mike Golden told Piper to scram during his interview, Piper acted passive and backed off to help put Golden over. Golden then produced a contract for a match on May 7 and tried to goad Piper into a match, to which Piper retorted he’s lost a lot of weight and isn’t a fighter anymore, only to finally get into it with Golden after more taunting and Golden spitting on him. Fans left with the idea that Piper would fight Golden, but Piper never appeared on May 7 and no announcement of them having a match took place.
  • Variety Magazine reports that all the weekly pro wrestling shows have dropped out of the top 15 in syndicated ratings. So the real story is the way that the wrestling shows made it into the top 15 in the first page. The WWF network had 5 shows, Crockett network had 4, and All-Star Wrestling network had at least 6, and each of those packages added up the ratings of all the shows in them and reported that rating. Compare to say, Wheel of Fortune, which is just the one show, and so you had the combined ratings of anywhere from 4-6+ shows trying to act like all the shows in that package were competitive ad space to a show like Wheel or Jeopardy, which is unfair to those single shows that pull in massive ratings. Anyway, those who calculate ratings have done away with those network packages in their calculations to level the playing field, so WWF isn’t getting ahead of Oprah and her single show’s 9 rating by combining five shows to pull a 10 rating anymore. Superstars, which is definitely WWF’s most watched show, doesn’t even come close to the top 15 on its own. For Dave, this isn’t a big deal, other than that it’ll be harder to track ratings, which are the best way to measure interest at the moment. Dave’s tv industry contacts think this is a big blow to wrestling as an industry, however, and more damaging to Crockett than McMahon since Vince has sold most of his ad slots for the year already. Nothing has materially changed, but advertisers are going to see wrestling as less hot, and their places in the top 15 have been taken by shows like Love Connection, Star Search, and Hollywood Squares. A wrestling network package might offer the same number of viewers, but advertisers look at the rankings to decide what’s hot, and wrestling’s not going to appear there anymore, and their ads in trade publications won’t be able to boast WWF or NWA as among the highest rated networks in syndication. Long story short, Promoters are going to have to chase advertising dollars rather than advertisers chasing promotions, and that spells an eventual downturn for the business.
  • [NWA] Clash of the Champions II, called Miami Mayhem, has been announced for June 8. Dave gets the feeling that it won’t be as hot a show as the first Clash and that those in the company think they might have given away too much on the first and thus hurt themselves at the gate. Dave thinks they did indeed give a lot, but they also failed to take advantage of a lot. Like, the barbed wire match was the end of a feud and they didn’t even know it because despite the heels being beaten quick and clean, they’re still running the match when there’s no point in continuing the feud. Dave thinks they had a lot of momentum coming off the first clash and they squashed it by downplaying everything in favor of the now-aborted Midnight Rider angle.
  • Randy Savage is now being billed as Undisputed WWF Champion. They’ve dropped the word “heavyweight” and Dave’s been told they’re planning to no longer use it, for whatever that’s worth.
  • WWF is working on a bunch of non-wrestling specials. Kind of like the Slammy Awards in the way they’ll sell the shows and in their hopes for ratings. Dave hopes not similar in terms of quality, at least.
  • Managers Mr. Fuji, Jimmy Hart, and Frenchy Martin appeared on WWF’s May 7 Boston house show. No idea if it’s just certain New England cities they’ll appear in or what, but yeah, that’s the update on the managers at house shows thing.
  • Dave and his friends were joking that Ultimate Warrior vs. Andre the Giant would be the worst possible match this generation. Lo and behold, Dave found out that they put that match on a few weeks back in Switzerland on a European tour. Dave asks “What did the Swiss ever do to Vince McMahon?” I can't find anything from Switzerland, but I did find a clip from Italy on that same tour.
Watch: Andre vs. Warrior
  • Dave saw the program for the Central States April 28 show in Kansas City and it’s the funniest thing he’s seen in a while. The program talks about the Freebirds (supposed to be coming in) and says they’re managed by Michael Hayes, and it has a picture of Hayes taken from their original heel days in Georgia in 1980. Bob Geigel runs the promotion and makes his own programs, and it’s good to see how up to date he’s managed to be.
  • Ken Mantell sent a letter to every promotion except WWF and NWA offering for World Class to work with them. World Class isn’t running a full-time schedule, so Mantell’s looking for ways to get his guys out there, but they only have a couple guys with any significant name value. Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy, Terry Taylor, and maybe Chris Adams could give a boost to a promotion getting into things with a local babyface, but just sending Taylor and Adams to have a match against each other won’t help anyone (they did that for the May 2 show in Memphis). Talent sharing isn’t helpful to the other promotions unless they can do a tv angle or work several shows rather than a one-off date (with the rare exception of a Michael Hayes date in Atlanta, or Gordy doing an independent show with a match against Brody or Abdullah).
  • [Memphis] Eddie Gilbert beat Jerry Lawler on May 2 to keep Missy Hyatt’s hair on her head. The finish saw Lawler punch Paul E. Dangerously (who manages Gilbert in Continental) after Missy failed to distract Lawler with her open shirt trick. Dangerously showed up when Lawler went after her, and then Kenny Dee, who was managing Lawler, threw powder in Lawler’s eyes, leading to Gilbert getting the pin. Money wound up changing hands from Dangerously to Hyatt to Dee after the match, so Kenny Dee is a newly minted heel manager.
  • Also in Memphis, the Iceman King Parsons vs. Kerry Von Erich match from the same show got little reaction. People came to see Lawler and Gilbert, not them, and Dave still doesn’t understand putting this match on and billing Parsons as a world champion when the next show is Lawler vs. Hennig for the AWA World Title. It’s just undercutting that match to act like the WCCW title is a world title and then turn around and go “Well here’s a different world title” and being very inconsistent in their recognition of world championships.
  • More on the special referee poll for the May 9 LawleHennig match. They’re running the poll from a 1-900 number (which means a cost of $1 per phone call), so the company was profiting off the poll. That explains the amount of promotion they were doing saying that Larry Hennig was winning the poll by a narrow margin due to fans in Minnesota flooding the line with votes for Hennig. They were doing no such thing, but it’s a smart way to bilk the local fan base. In Memphis, they run their tv show live, so when it started at 11 am, they did a segment where they said the poll would close at noon (Hennig still leading the results) to keep fans voting until the last minute, even doing another segment at 11:45 am. At noon, Lawler came out and acted all serious with his best Bad News Barrett impression and said he was afraid he had some bad news. “Bad news for Curt Hennig, that is,” and announced Jackie Fargo was the winner of the referee poll. Dave guesses the reason for the charge is probably to drum up enough money to pay Curt Hennig enough to be happy, but this sure is a new way to try and make money off wrestling.
  • There’s a newcomer in the Oregon territory named Steve Austin. No, he’s not stone cold, but he’s also used the name Steve Winters (Dave believes this is his real name), and he’ll wind up wrestling for Stampede in the future under the name Lance Idol. Dave’s seen him a bit before in his early days in the Bay area and recalls him being a good worker trying to emulate Ray Stevens in style.
  • Don Owen’s May 7 show had the best case for allowing blading that Dave has ever heard of. They had a Northwest Tag Title cage match with Steve Doll and Scott Peterson beating Avalanche and Mike Golden to regain the titles. Owen believes you need blood in a cage match, while the Oregon commission has banned blading, so how do you suppose Owen got around the issue? Mike Golden got bloody hardway, and they wanted Peterson to bleed too, so they had Golden and Avalanche try to hardway Peterson with potatoes to the forehead. Dave hears they did some 14 hard punches to Peterson’s head and none of them opened him up. One did bust up his nose a bit, though. This is what happens when blading is banned and wrestlers feel the need to get color - they’re going to be really unsafe and hurt themselves.
  • Tatsumi Fujinami beat Vader by countout on April 27, in a show that drew 5,000 in Osaka. For comparison, All Japan’s Brody/Tenryu match there last month drew 4,000. Fujinami had vowed to retire if he couldn’t beat Vader, so they kind of had to have that finish if they wanted Vader to keep his monster aura without honoring a retirement. Anyway, Dave isn’t sure if this is legit or just an angle, but Fujinami is being reported as trying to make a play for the top spot now that Inoki’s foot is broken. He’s even got a new haircut to symbolize his change from being a young disciple of Inoki to being his own man.
  • All Japan Women’s May 15 show has a hell of a triple main event lineup. At the top of the card you have the Crush Girls vs. the Jumping Bomb Angels. Then you have Mika Suzuki vs. Kaoru Maeda for the jr. championship (not a weight class, but rather a title exclusively for wrestlers with under 2 years experience). Lastly, Erika Shishido and Nobuko Kimura defend the AJW tag titles against two of the standout rookies from the class of 1987 who are getting their first crack at major exposure, Manami Toyota and Toshiyo Yamada. Erika Shishido, by the way, is a 17 year old from the class of 1986 and the company has big plans for her as a future heel star and partner for Bull Nakano. You may know her better as Aja Kong.
  • Windy City Wrestling drew remarkably well, drawing $40,000 at International Amphitheater in Chicago. It’s the largest gate Dave’s ever heard of for an independent promotion. The card had Col. DeBeers, Candi Divine and Debbie Combs, Paul E. Dangerously, Buddy Rose and Doug Somers, and a bunch else going on. Based on ticket prices, they pulled an audience of over 4,000 people. The promoter sold the show to the venue for $10,000, so they made a big profit on the event. WWF has taken notice and already there’s talk of them running the same venue, because they believe it may tap into a different crowd than the Rosemont Horizon.
  • [Stampede] Owen Hart’s reign as North American champion has ended as of May 6. He dropped the title to Makhan Singh, whom he beat for the title on April 10, 1987. Definitely a step toward Owen’s departure from the promotion here, as his last match with Stampede if he does go to the WWF will be on May 14 before he does the IWGP series for New Japan. Owen did agree to go to the WWF for a masked gimmick, either a Tiger Mask or Mighty Mouse type, but he’s apparently having second thoughts, perhaps related to a personal goal he supposedly has of having the match of the year with Ric Flair. Sadly, Owen’s never going to get that match. Bret and Davey Boy Smith are pushing hard for Owen to come to WWF.
  • Heading to Stampede is Steve Blackman. Blackman’s done some jobs for WWF in the past and is kind of a powerlifter type. He’s being paired with Brick Bronsky, whom Dave describes as an untalented lifter type (Dave rates the May 7 Edmonton match between Kerry Brown and Bronsky at -3.5 stars and calls it one of the worst matches Stampede will ever have), and their team name is the Abortion Alliance. Jeezus, Bruce.
  • A new women’s wrestling promotion is supposed to start up, doing tapings at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Wendi Richter and Misty Blue are said to be the top stars and Gordon Solie is said to be on board for announcing, and there’s supposedly tv contracts lined up.
  • Ted Turner is working on a new cable station called TNT. It’s gonna have a lot of MGM movies and sports events, and probably eventually some Crockett wrestling. The FCC is expected to change some regulations, which would put WTBS back to only being Atlanta-local and all the superstations will revert to local tv.
  • Looks like a lock that Financial News Network will be taking on Continental by the end of the month or early June. As for a deal with New Japan, that seems to be on hold, as neither side could come to an agreement.
  • Lawsuits corner. WWF is suing FNN over their Hulkamania package. Larry Sharpe is suing Bam Bam Bigelow for breach of contract. Sharpe was Bigelow’s real manager back in Japan.
  • The best match on an independent show in Brooklyn on April 29 saw Lou Fabiano (a former WWF jobber) team with Cactus Jack against George Skaaland and Tom Brandi. Cactus Jack is a trainee of Dominic DeNucci, and Dave hears that he’s a top flight worker.
  • Word is that Futahaguro (real name Koji Kitao), the yokozuna who got kicked out of sumo, is reporting to the Monster Factory in New Jersey to train under Larry Sharpe. He’s in New York this week on other business (mostly talk shows), so no definite word, but that’s the rumor coming out of the area.
  • The Von Erich Parade of Champions drew an estimated 7,000 fans. Dave anticipates a more accurate estimate and gate next week. The show was… Let me just give some highlights. The first match was terrible. The second match was mostly rest holds and had no heat, and after winning the match Mike George grabbed the mic to make sure the fans knew he was recognized as World Champion in Kansas City. Nobody cared because nobody cares about the Kansas City promotion. Steve Casey was supposed to challenge Eric Embry for the light heavyweight title, but he came in 1.5 pounds over the weight limit. After the crowd heckled Embry, he agreed to a non-title match, which Casey won in 19 seconds. That extra weight made all the difference, I reckon. Bill Irwin vs. Black Bart was fair. Then you had Michael Hayes vs. Terry Gordy in a triple tower of doom and Dave says that while there was heat, the gimmick’s a total dud because you can’t do any moves or take any bumps the way it’s all structured. They then gave the crowd something good, as Terry Taylor beat Chris Adams to keep the Texas title in a great match. The Texas roundup in the triple tower of doom, on the other hand, was the opposite of great. If Dusty plans to actually use this concept, he’s got a lot of work cut out for him, because not one fan in the building understood what the hell was going on. Bruiser Brody carried his match teaming with Kevin Von Erich against Buddy Roberts and Solomon Grundy, and nobody cared about Kevin. They had to replace Schaun Simpson with Terry Gordy due to injury suffered in the Texas roundup for the Wild West/Texas tag title unification match, and Gordy/Simpson won by disqualification. It’s unclear if that makes the Simpsons Wild West tag champs and Gordy/Simpson Texas tag champs, or if it unifies the titles on the Simpsons, or what. In the end, Kerry Von Erich regained the WCCW title. Nobody cares. World Class is every bit as fucked as WCW in 2000.
  • Dave’s got the lineup for the second Clash, and he thinks the NWA is now afraid to put on a hot show. Windham vs. Ricky Santana, Koloff vs. Al Perez, Dusty vs. Larry Zbysko, the Garvins vs. Rotunda and Rick Steiner, the Fantastics vs. Sheepherders for the U.S. Tag Titles, and Blanchard/Anderson defending the NWA tag titles against Sting and Steve Williams. No Flair, Luger, or Road Warriors in sight.
  • When the NWA announced Dusty’s reinstatement, the reaction was pretty negative. After a moment of silence, one woman cheered and two more joined her, and they were swiftly drowned in a chorus of boos.
  • Night 2 of the Crockett Cup grossed $115,000 at the gate. The Cup as a whole managed a combined gate equal to the merch sales gross at Wrestlemania.
  • They’re building a new Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, and it’s supposed to open in the fall. Word is that WWF will get the first two shows there and Crockett will be relegated to the 2,500 seat Charlotte Park Center, since the old Coliseum building will be torn down. WWF can’t run the existing Coliseum for the same reasons Crockett can’t touch Madison Square Garden, but the new Coliseum has different management with no relationship to Crockett, so they’re going to give WWF a chance.
  • Gordon Solie and Mike Graham’s new Florida Championship Wrestling has opened up and did their first tv taping on April 30. They’re looking to run five days a week in central Florida starting real soon.
  • Antonio Inoki’s injury has led to New Japan declaring the IWGP Title vacant. Tatsumi Fujinami battles Vader on May 7 for the title. Seems to be a lot of behind the scenes tension between Fujinami and Choshu as well. Fujinami walked out after the April 27 show, leaving only Choshu of the original four top draws in the company.
  • Tiger Mask (Mitsuharu Misawa) is getting married on May 10 and will unmask for the wedding. He’s marrying movie star Tomomi Shiina. After the wedding he may stop wrestling as Tiger Mask and go back to his real name.
  • As soon as TNT is available in 30 million homes, Crockett’s tv will be moved there. All kinds of rumors are swirling about Crockett and Turner, but as far as Dave’s aware no firm deal of any kind has been reached.
  • The NWA, Mike Rotunda, Kevin Sullivan, and the city of Albany are all being sued for “torturous acts and personal injury” by 16 year old Mike Strickland. Strickland alleges that on February 9 he was patting wrestlers on the back when city police officers working security for the show seized him and arrested him, then took him to a secluded area where Rotunda and Sullivan “wilfully, intentionally and purposefully assaulted and attempted to commit violent and illegal physical injury” on him and that the police did nothing to stop the beating.
  • Dave wants us to know that although it was extremely predictable, he found the Midnight Express’s party on the WTBS show really entertaining. Yeah, when you have a cake in wrestling it winds up in the heel or announcer’s face, but the banter between Cornette and Stan Lane was really fun.
Watch: Jim Cornette gets caked
  • Ted Turner’s got some kind of package deal he’s pitching, using the July NWA ppv as incentive to get cable systems to buy in on TNT. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Dave understands that the cable companies will likely get a higher share of revenue for the PPV from the show than the usual 50/50 split, and Dave says this show is really do or die for Crockett.
  • Abdullah the Butcher and Kamala no-showed Jerry Blackwell’s May 8 show. They had turned down a spot at the Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions to do that show, so that’s ironic.
  • ”JERRY LAWLER PINNED CURT HENNIG TO WIN THE AWA TITLE ON 5/9 IN MEMPHIS BEFORE 9,500 FANS." The match was apparently “not great” and saw Lawler win by grabbing Hennig by the knees and kangaroo flipping him headlong into the ring post for the pin. Great reaction to the finish, but yeah, Lawler is the new AWA champion. More on this next week.
Watch: the finish to Lawler vs. Hennig
  • One letter writer chimes in that “loser groups” like GLOW and POWW don’t deserve time in the Observer. In fact, he hopes they lose their time slots in New York and Boston to Continental and Memphis to give WWF real competition. Yeah, because those groups are going to be able to do that.
  • Still a bunch of letters sniping back and forth about Clash vs. Wrestlemania. One says they can’t believe anyone could think FlaiSting was the best match they’ve seen in years. Another says that for “Vince McMahon to put WWF fans through that show constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.” As usual, wrestling fans are level-headed and gracious in their disagreements. It warms my soul to see us carrying on this proud tradition of sober discourse on reddit in 2020.
NEXT WEEK: AWA Champion Jerry Lawler, reports from Texas Stadium, Fujinami becomes IWGP champion, Oregon-Washington Wrestling Federation debut show, and more

READ ME: PART 6
Julia went back home later that weekend, but we promised to keep each other informed about the Lunatic Asylum incident and what it had to do with Edmond Wright. It was still something at the back of both our minds. I hoped that perhaps the Read Me book would offer up some information. Instead, it offered me more hidden gems and secrets, such as my next story.
I picked up the book and sat it down on my lap after I had poured my Sunday morning coffee. The READ ME book didn’t light up as it usually did, probably because it didn’t have to beg my attention. Instead, this morning I was begging for its attention.
I didn’t feel the usual rise in my heart of fear or excitement. It was more like an expectant feeling, which was very much like you had with a loving parent, especially one’s mother. I began to feel the book in my hand suddenly grow warm at my touch, and the book put out a positive aura. I felt, and this may sound odd, loved by it.
I looked down, and there before me were no words. It was an empty canvas of yellowed and aged paper. I closed my eyes and felt it. That is when I began to see the book in my mind’s eye. Inside my mind, the words and images came to life as though I were a blind man suddenly able to see with my third eye.
THE CRYSTAL SKULL
I lifted my chest and took a deep breath. There before me was a young woman and an older man standing in a room staring at something under glass.
I studied them intently. I watched as she swayed back, uncertain as to what she was doing or about to do. The man seemed much more intent, and then he spoke. At first, I could not make out what he was saying to the young woman. Then I saw them both walk over to another glass case, and the man pointed to the glass case. Inside it was a black onyx skull.
I heard the woman speak.
“Charlie, I’m not sure there are so many other things you could buy me.”
“But there are only thirteen in the world, and this my dear is the fourteenth skull.”
“I don’t see the point. What can it do except sit on a shelf?”
“Knowing it is yours to keep, Meg, my sweet should be enough.”
I realized very quickly that they were famous. I gasped because the last time I had heard anything of Meg and Charlie Vandovere was when they had both gone missing two summers ago. Young Meg was an influencer who got her start playing a stupid teenager on Youtube some reality show where billionaires live with people in trailers and see if they can survive. It was appalling, but my daughter used to watch it religiously. Charlie Vandovere was a former Senator's son but made his fortune selling boat engines. In his younger years, he was known as a playboy, then shocked everyone when he married Meg Voight of Voight Enterprises. Her family owned every cleaning product and two television networks. Then I heard the young woman speak to me.
You are watching the event as I recall it, but this is the last thing I remember before Charlie changed. I know it sounds strange, and it will sound possibly insane, but ever since the moment he set his sights on that Black Skull, he was a man possessed.
We were newly married when he got a call from one of his henchmen, as I called them, called him to let him know about a new and rare find. Charlie was a collector of rare and fine antiques and was positively a hoarder. Only rich people have storage spaces for their hoarding, and Charlie had seventy-five to date! Everyone loved pleasing Charlie. If one of his helpers found something, he liked they made a commission. Everyone was in love with Charlie- well, Charlie’s money. I had my own, so I didn’t care. I was in the process of rebuilding my brand of cellphone holders. I also had a record coming out the following spring, before the final event that eradicated all possibility of my becoming anything except a stupid celebrity known for playing the dumb blonde every chance I got.
We had the building to ourselves while we looked at the Black Skull.
“Where did you obtain it?” Charlie asked the young man standing before him.
“My aunt Sylvia Stanton had it. She was given the Skull after she finished making “Tragedy in Egypt” one of her most thrilling films.”
“Oh, yes, I recall her. She was that weird artist that built the Artist House. Who gave it to her?” Charlie asked.
“A man of much wealth, he was known to have ties to the occult. He was no longer allowed to keep it. The Skull told him he was no longer the keeper of the Skull and must give it to someone that will watch over it. His time was up, so, knowing Sylvia Stanton was a collector of rare things, he had no other option.”
“Brilliant!” Charlie had exclaimed.
“How would you like to pay?”
“Card, my assistant Tammy will send you my information first thing in the morning.”
The entire ride home, Charlie couldn’t take his eyes off of the Skull. He seemed more preoccupied with it than his newly wedded wife. I tried not to get upset; he was always like that when he got a new toy. It was a phase, I told myself.
Only it wasn’t a phase. Once we were home, Charlie began locking himself in his vault to spend time alone with the Skull.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. He only left for dinner or essential engagements. Our relationship began to deteriorate. The times we did see each other, we fought. My life began to be spent at all-night parties and clubs. I started seeing other people once I realized my husband could care less about me. Our vows no longer mattered. Paparazzi loved printing stories about me in their magazines. I didn’t care. I let them print whatever the hell they wanted.
Then one day, something changed.
“Charlie seemed to want to speak to me.”
Only it wasn’t why I thought.
“Meg, dearest, I need you to come into the vault with me.”
Puzzled, I put down my cell phone. I was on Instagram live, promoting a new line of handbags when he interrupted. I pretended I was happy to see him and then signed out, blowing my viewers a kiss before I shut off the phone and looked up at him as though daggers could kill.
“What the fuck do you want?”
“I know things have been rather hard lately, but I think I finally figured out the mystery. I want to share it with you. Please, Meg.”
I stood up and let him lead me to the vault. When I went inside it, I saw a glow of blue and purple coming from the Skull. Thinking he had put a light under it, I crossed my arms and sighed.
“What is the meaning of this, Charlie?”
“Sit across from me at the table and just listen.”
“What am I listening to?”
“Shh”
I didn’t hear anything. I was about to walk out, thinking Charlie had finally gone over the bend, when I heard whispering.
I looked at Charlie. “Are you doing that?”
“No, please listen. Tell me, what do you hear?”
“Whispering,” I said, leaning into the Skull.
I heard screaming.
I sat back in my chair, frightened.
I heard other sounds, too, sounds like men fighting. It was as though I were listening to a recording of a war.
“Do you hear the men?” he asked me.
I nodded, looking up at Charlie.
“Ask them to show you anything. They will show you the world!”
“When will Audry have dinner ready this evening?”
SEVEN O’CLOCK I heard it whisper.
I wasn’t sure I had heard it, but five minutes later, at precisely seven sharp, I heard Audry, our cook, ring the dinner bell. She never served dinner at the same time each night.
Fascinated, I asked it other things, and it told me everything.
Charlie and I missed our dinner that Audry had slaved away over because we were so intent on learning all we could. The Skull seemed to know everything. It was as though it had a memory built inside of it. It was like a recording device that kept track of every event from the beginning of time until this moment. It even knew events in the future.
I began to see the allure it had over Charlie. I couldn’t place it, but something felt alive inside of it. It was like it was the keeper of souls.
Days passed. I couldn’t stop asking the Crystal skull things. We asked things we shouldn’t know of others. We asked things to make us more affluent and more successful. We were greedy and stupid. We spent hours entertaining ourselves about trivial matters such as people we knew, stock market exchanges, the latest trends. Then one dark evening, I asked it something I only regretted later.
“What is the date of my death?”
“August twentieth, two thousand and fourteen shot dead by a silver bullet of a stranger.” I heard the whispering say.
I looked at Charlie, and he smirked.
“You heard it wrong.”
“NO! That is tomorrow! When is Charlie going to die?” I asked as Charlie shot me dirty looks.
At first, we heard nothing. Then we heard it whisper deep until you could hear a deep voice speak from it. Charlie’s hands trembled, and tears welled up in his eyes when he listened to the answer.
AUGUST TWENTIETH, TWO THOUSAND AND FOURTEEN SHOT DEAD BY A SILVER BULLET OF A STRANGER.”
Charlie looked at me, and for the first time in weeks, he left me alone with the Crystal Skull.
I stared at the thing as it looked up at me with two gaping holes for eyes. The darkness in the item was evident to me now. It crept up upon my back and down into my belly. I felt the tinge of fear of death that I was now inevitable would come.
I couldn’t let it. I wouldn’t allow it.
Instead, I left the room and left the Skull alone.
I went to seek out Charlie to talk to him.
“We don’t have to listen to it,” I said to him.
“It is done.”
“No. I have an idea. What if we have a party with some friends tomorrow? Surely, if people are here, then we will have some protection. We may have people to help us if someone breaks in. Yes, I think that is the best idea.”
I had made up my mind. Charlie seemed comforted by the idea of a party. Having people there with us to help us stay alive was very important. If we had protection, nothing and no one would hurt us now, especially a stranger.
So we planned a party for the day of our death. The day had gone off without a hitch. By six o’clock, we met our guests in the parlor. There were four other couples altogether. One couple was a younger couple Deb and Ryan. Ryan, we had both only met once. I wouldn’t have considered him a stranger because we had met him once.
So we danced, we ate, we carried on finally after an excellent drunk, Charlie began to tell everyone about the Black Crystal Skull.
I had tried to get him to stop, but half the party was feeling rather rowdy by this time. Ryan pulled out a small back of cocaine and crushed it up on our bar. He began offering everyone a share of the little white lines. I turned down the coke and tried to stand up from the wine I had drunk. I didn’t realize it, but I was growing a bit dizzy.
I finally could stand no longer and had to sit on the sofa.
Ryan was talking to Charlie, who was bragging to everyone about our unique Skull. He made everyone try asking the Skull a question. I couldn’t remember what everyone asked. I just heard a lot of oohs and ahhs.
As the night wore down, Deb and Ryan were in a corner arguing. I was saying goodnight to our other guests. Just as the last guest had left, the doorbell rang. Thinking it was one of our guests that had forgotten something, Charlie answered the door.
There in front of him was a tall man. He smiled graciously.
“Hello, sorry to barge in, but I am here to pick up Deb and Ryan.”
“Mack!” Ryan yelled. “Come on in, buddy!”
I looked at Charlie, who was smiling. “What is one more friend?”
I was concerned because we had never met Mack.
“Sorry, are you two ready to go?” Mack asked.
Deb looked mad still as she stood in the corner with her arms crossed. She said nothing, which I thought was odd.
“Hey, Charlie, you gotta show my boy Mack that trick you all do with the skull.”
“Oh, well, it’s nothing.”
“No, you have to show Mack,” Ryan turned to his friend Mack. “You are going to shit when you see this.”
“Oh, alright.” Charlie went into the vault and came back with the black crystal skull.
“What is this?” Mack asked.
“This is that weird Skull I texted you about. You must check it out. Ask it anything!”
“Man, that’s weird. What for?” Mack asked.
“It will tell you anything.”
“Fine.”
“Okay, so umm, where can I get a large chunk of change to buy my girlfriend an engagement ring?”
“You want to marry Theresa?” Ryan laughed.
“Shhh, it will tell you the answer. You gotta be quiet.”
“ONE SILVER BULLET IN YOUR GUN IN YOUR BACK POCKET WILL GIVE YOU THE ANSWERS YOU SEEK, AND NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.”
Charlie looked up at me, and I looked at him. We both turned towards Mack, who was looking down at the Skull. It was as if the last twenty-four hours had come down to this moment.
There was now a look in Mack’s eyes, and he reached for his back pocket. His eyes grew a darker color, and he looked from us to Deb and Ryan. He pulled out the gun and shot me first.
As I lay dying on our parlor floor, I heard the gun go off again and then again. “Can’t have Deb as a witness; she likes to talk,” Ryan said to Mack.
Charlie and Deb both were lying next to me on the floor as Ryan and Mack began ransacking our vault.
The last thing I heard was Mack asking the Skull where to hide our bodies.
“NO ONE HAS THE COMBINATION TO THE VAULT. IT WILL BE MANY MANY WINTERS BEFORE ANYONE COMES TO COLLECT.”
I slowly fell into darkness as I felt my body being carried into the vault as the door locked behind me. I lay slumped over Deb and Charlie. Our bodies are still there should anyone come looking.
I felt the life go out of me as a tear fell from my left eye—what a tragic tale. I knew I needed to do the right thing, but how does one turn in a suspect whose name you didn’t know?
I stood and closed the book.
Then I felt something hit me from behind as though an unknown source of lightning was shocking my spine. I screamed and cried at the pain that was now surging through me.
I could feel the bullets that had shot Charlie, Deb, and Meg. As the electricity shot through me, I felt something leave my body. I can’t explain it. I was leaving my body.
I had never had an out of body experience before. Until now, I had not known such a thing could be real. I was floating over my body, and I looked into the distance and could see the light beckoning me to come hither.
My eyes grew in pain, and then I saw it on a table in a store. It was sitting on a glass shelf with a white price tag on it. It was the black crystal skull.
I looked around and recognized the store as one that was on the edge of town. I suddenly grew exhausted and fell to the floor and back inside my body.
It was some hours before I woke. When I did, it was nearly dawn Monday morning. I sat up, rubbing my eyes. I vaguely recalled what had occurred the evening before. I collected myself up off of the floor and wandered into the kitchen.
Unsure as to what I was to do with all this knowledge. It felt very sure now of what I had to do.
The Read Me book was connected to souls who were telling their tales so that they could move on in death. I felt a sense of urgency at that moment. For Meg and Charlie to have closure, I had to make sure their killers were found, and the only way I could do that, as they would be long gone now, was to find that Skull and ask it.
So that morning, when the shop opened up, I went to the Mysterium Emporium and purchased one black crystal skull.
When I got home, I had grown somewhat afraid of it. After everything that had happened to Charlie, Meg, and the others. The greed and pain. I wasn’t sure why I had done it.
Then I heard an intense voice coming from the Skull.
“Finally, someone worthy of my knowledge. I am your final gift. Ask me anything, and I will help you, kind soul.”
So that is what I did.
A few weeks later, I saw on the news that Mack and Ryan had been found at different hideouts in the city of Portland, Oregon. I was happy to have helped them.
I spent the rest of the day thinking that if the Skull was the final gift to me, then what a powerful gift it was. I stored it in a box on my bookshelf, keeping it safe and hidden from all others' eyes. Part of me was saddened by the fact that the Read Me book may be done with me.
As I curled up in bed, I looked up at my ceiling and thought of all the lives I had perhaps helped.
Something felt off, though. I couldn’t place what it was.
I closed my eyes and drifted off to slumber. As I lay there creeping into dreamland, I sat straight up out of bed.
“Edmond Wright, you are not finished yet. The Skull will know why you have come.”

Lastly, reflect on your diary!
Yeah, so. We spend too much on food - I know this week seems like a decent week by my spending, but I think D spent around $400 when the groceries + Costco bill were added. We’re trying to be better about planning our shopping trips, because I personally think it’s absolutely ridiculous to have to get groceries more than once a week. D is slowly coming around to this. Honestly, this was probably a quieter spending week - I feel like we usually get takeout at least twice a week (instead of once)?

2020.10.19 17:26 cilantro_samosa [OC] Which front offices and agents are the 3 major newsbreakers connected to? I went through 6000+ tweets to find out!

If this sounds somewhat familiar, that's because I did a 2019-2020 version and posted it back in March.
In terms of changes from that post:
TL;DR
Tracked tweets of Woj, Shams and Haynes from 2018-2020 to see whether any of them report on a certain team or a certain agent's players more than their counterparts. Here is the main graph concerning a reporter's percentage of tweets per team separated into three periods (2019 season, 2020 offseason, 2020 season). Here is a separate graph with the Lakers and Warriors, because Haynes's percentages would skew the first graph.

During times like the NBA trade deadline or the lifting of the NBA free-agency moratorium, it’s not uncommon to see Twitter replies to (or Reddit comments about) star reporters reference their performance relative to others.
Woj is the preeminent scoop hound, but he is also notorious for writing hit pieces on LeBron (sources say it’s been widely rumoured that the reason for these is that Woj has always been unable to place a reliable source in LeBron’s camp). On the other end of the spectrum, it has been revealed that in exchange for exclusive intel on league memos and Pistons dealings, Woj wrote puff pieces on then-GM Joe Dumars (see above Kevin Draper link). Last summer, Woj was accused of being a Clippers shill on this very discussion board for noticeably driving the Kawhi Leonard free agency conversation towards the team.
This is the reason I undertook this project: to see whether some reporters have more sources in certain teams (and certain agencies) than other reporters.
First I’ll explain the methodology, then present the data with some initial comments.

Methodology

To make this manageable on myself, I limited myself to tracking the 3 major national reporters: Shams Charania of the Athletic, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports and the aforementioned Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
The time period I initially tracked for was from January 1, 2020 to the end of the regular season March, but after finding a Twitter scraping tool on GitHub called Twint, I was able to easily retrieve all tweets since September 27, 2018. However, a month ago, Twitter closed their old API endpoints, and Twint ceased to work. I used vicinitas.io but the data loading became more time-consuming. Therefore, the tweets are up to the date of October 15 2020.
How I determined information was by manually parsing text tweets by the reporter (no retweets):
Now, I didn’t take every single text tweet:
Next, I had to assign possible teams to each tweet:
With all the methodology out of the way, here’s the data! (Here’s a link to a full Google Sheet)

Teams

Here's a graph of number of tweets per team per period, with the colours denoting reporter.
On a quick glance, here's which teams saw a significant period-over-period increase in number of tweets:
And here's which teams saw decreases over a period-by-period basis:
The problem with just using number of tweets is that it's not close on totals between Haynes vs. Woj or Shams. Here's a graph showing total number of tweets in each period for all three reporters. Haynes's most reported period doesn't even stack up to the least reported period of Woj or Shams.
Instead, let's look at percentage of tweets per team per period.
Now, you'll notice that there's two teams missing from the above graph: the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers. Here's the graphs for those two teams. As you can see, they would skew the previous graph far too much. During the 2019 NBA season, 27% of Chris Haynes's qualifying tweets could be possibly linked to the Warriors, and 14% of his qualifying tweets could be possibly linked to the Lakers.

Agents

Here's the top 10 agents in terms of number of potential tweets concerning their clients.
Agent Haynes Shams Woj Total
Rich Paul 15 28 24 67
Mark Bartelstein 4 16 30 50
Jeff Schwartz 3 10 25 38
Bill Duffy 2 13 14 29
Leon Rose 1 12 15 28
Aaron Mintz 2 9 15 26
Juan Perez 5 10 8 23
Aaron Goodwin 11 8 1 20
Steven Heumann 1 6 12 19
Sam Permut 1 13 5 19
Woj has the most tweets directly connected to agents by far. It wasn't uncommon to see "Player X signs deal with Team Y, Agent Z of Agency F tells ESPN." The agents that go to Woj (and some of their top clients):
One thing I found very intriguing: 15/16 of tweets concerning an Aaron Turner client were reported on by Shams. Turner is the head of Verus Basketball, whose clients include Terry Rozier, Victor Oladipo and Kevin Knox. Shams also reported more than 50% of news relating to clients of Sam Permut of Roc Nation. Permut is the current agent of Kyrie Irving, after Irving fired Jeff Wechsler near the beginning of the 2019 offseason. Permut also reps the Morris brothers and Trey Burke.
As for Chris Haynes, he doesn't really do much agent news (at least not at the level of Woj and Shams). However, he reported more than 50% of news relating to clients of Aaron Goodwin of Goodwin Sports Management, who reps Damian Lillard and DeMar DeRozan.
Here are the top 10 free agents from Forbes, along with their agent and who I predict will be the first/only one to break the news.
Player Agent Most Likely Reporter
Anthony Davis Rich Paul Too close to call, leaning Shams
Brandon Ingram Jeff Schwartz Woj
DeMar DeRozan Aaron Goodwin Haynes
Fred VanVleet Brian Jungreis Limited data
Andre Drummond Jeff Schwartz Woj
Montrezl Harrell Rich Paul Too close to call, leaning Shams
Gordon Hayward Mark Bartelstein Woj
Danilo Gallinari Michael Tellem Woj
Bogdan Bogdanovic Alexander Raskovic, Jason Ranne Limited data, but part of Wasserman, whose players are predominantly reported on by Woj
Davis Bertans Arturs Kalnitis Limited data
Thanks for reading! As always with this type of work, human error is not completely eliminated. If you think a tweet was mistakenly removed, feel free to drop me a line and I’ll try to explain my thought process on that specific tweet! Hope y’all enjoyed the research!

  • WCCW has finally announced the card for their May 8 David and Mike Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions. Credit to the company, they’ve not put much effort into pushing the Von Erich part of the name this year and seem to have kept that part out of deference to Fritz. The headliners are two triple tower of doom matches. Dave’s understanding is that there will be three rings built atop one another with a firefighter’s pole through the center to allow ring to ring transitions. You can also move from level to level by climbing the cage from the inside. They’re also having an 18-man Royal Rumble style battle royal called a Texas Roundup inside the three rings, with the winner being the wrestler who gets to the third ring, climbs the cage, and grabs the envelope with the “money” for the winner and five prizes for fans. I’m astonished TNA in the Jarrett/Russo days never did this. Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy will have a Bad Street match, Kerry Von Erich challenges King Parsons for the title, and Kevin Von Erich teams with Bruiser Brody vs. Buddy Roberts and a mystery partner. Roberts was originally meant to partner with Kamala or Abdullah the Butcher, but they’re both booked. There will be other matches as well, but eh.
  • Over in Oregon the battle of May 7 is coming. Don Owen’s show in Portland will feature Hennig vs. Tom Zenk along with his regular crew, while Billy Jack Haynes’ Oregon-Washington Wrestling Federation debuts twenty miles away in Oregon City. No cards, partial or complete, have been announced, but Haynes has 16 guys including Tom Magee (yes, the one who only Bret Hart knew how to make look good), Steve Gatorwolf (fuck Steve Gatorwolf), Chavo Guerrero, Corporal Kirchner (due to be promoted to Colonel when WWF turns their eyes this way), Brian Adams, Fred Ottman (Memphis’s Big Bubba, whom you’ll come to love as Typhoon in a couple years), himself, and a bunch of other guys who I can’t make any interesting comments about.
  • Memphis’s Monday show after those will surely be the most talked about show of the weekend, though. Hennig defends the AWA Title against Jerry Lawler in a match where Lawler will retire if he doesn’t become champion. Most of the undercard is still unknown, but that match alone carries the interest.
  • Crockett has made a major retreat and given up the New York market. Nassau Coliseum accepted WWF’s ultimatum, and will now refuse to allow Crockett to run shows. Over Crockett’s four show run at the arena since November, it’s been rocky. They had a successful first show in November, but the second show was the Bunkhouse Stampede in January, which drew a gate of $80,000 (actually above WWF’s average there). But that show was so poorly received it killed them. The third show drew poorly, and they managed to improve a bit to $48,000, around WWF’s typical non-Hogan card there, for the fourth show. But with the ultimatum and the fact that gates have dropped to basically equivalent to a WWF card, they’re out. They’ve also lost their time slot in New York, leaving them without local tv access in New York and LA. Crockett may have pulled the plug on New York tv themselves. They were paying a rumored $6,000 weekly for access, and that just does not make sense to do when you can’t run local shows anymore. It will hurt their ad revenue, so it’s a mixed bag.
  • WWF taped Saturday Night’s Main Event on April 22 to air April 30. Dave mentioned the results last week, but upon airing some changes had been made. They didn’t air Andre/Roberts and instead put on a Rick Rude vs. Koko B. Ware match. Randy Savage is obviously the face of the company right now - they didn’t even mention Hogan on the episode. And it’s a big improvement to the wrestling quality having Savage as the main event over Hogan. Duggan’s work has significantly regressed. Bulldogs vs. Demolition was garbage and they were not working together at all. Rude vs. Ware was fairly good and the only match that didn’t involve a total carry job by one guy.
  • Joe Pedicino is collaborating with WATL-TV in Atlanta to do a 30 hour wrestling telethon on June 17-18. They’re even going to have over six hours of wrestling live in studio. As part of the telethon, they’ll have a bunch of syndicated wrestling shows as well as the Henry Winkler movie The One and Only (Dave’s favorite wrestling movie of all time) and the Alex Karras movie Mad Bull (not as good, but some good in it). They’re also going to do a segment on the history of pro wrestling in Atlanta. Proceeds will go to the Atlanta police department so they can buy bullet proof vests. Dave even has word that two WWF wrestlers will appear.
  • Dave’s regular typewriter is in the shop, so he’s using a different one that kind of sucks. He apologizes for any issues, and has gone with a smaller font to give more content as a make-good. Yay, more stuff for me to type about.
  • [All Japan] John Tenta accidentally broke Jimmy Snuka’s ribs on April 21 with a powerslam. Not much else of interest out of All Japan this week.
  • [New Japan] Antonio Inoki has a broken foot and is out of action. That’s gonna hurt New Japan at the gate. Riki Choshu vs. Vader has been made to replace Vader vs. Inoki for May 7. It’ll be an interesting test of Choshu’s remaining drawing power.
  • New Japan went really weird with a locker room scene on the April 22 tv show. The main event had Inoki and Tatsumi Fujinami beating Vader and Masahiro Saito by dq, and the locker room scene had Inoki and Fujinami arguing. Fujinami then got scissors and started cutting his own hair until Inoki hit him and told him to wrestle Vader in Osaka on April 27 (at which show Fujinami declared he’d retire if he lost).
  • The major hype in Memphis still surrounds the LawleHennig match set for May 9. They’re claiming Larry Hennig is leading the voting for referee over Jackie Fargo, but that’s obviously to drum up more support for Lalwer.
  • Meanwhile, Memphis is bringing in guys from WCCW for three matches on May 2. Dave’s heard conflicting stories. They’re there for just the one show, or they’ll be in again multiple times. Just have to wait and see, Dave supposes. Even with Lawler vs. Eddie Gilbert with Missy’s hair at stake, they’re billing Iceman King Parsons vs. Kerry Von Erich for the WCCW Title as the main event, and Dave doesn’t get the point in bringing in another world champion when you’re spending so much effort and time on hyping up the AWA title match for the next week. This is the beginning of the Memphis/WCCW alliance and eventual merger.
  • A funny story from Southern Championship Wrestling. They’ve got this local country western DJ on color commentary and he goes by Rhubarb Jones. For a few weeks, they did a bit where Paul E. Dangerously constantly called him “Rub Hard Jones” and Jones would correct him. Then the blowoff was Dangerously asking “How come whenever I call you Rub Hard you say it’s Rhubarb, but when Missy Hyatt calls you Rhubarb, you say Rub Hard?” This made it on the air. And honestly, it sounds like a fucking funny bit.
  • Stampede’s crowds have dipped a bit. It’s probably a bit of annual drop off as summer comes along, but also according to local fans it’s because the show has become so much less family oriented with all the blood and excessive violence lately. Kids have been the biggest demographic to drop, so that makes some sense.
  • Les Thornton is not content to start up a competing wrestling school to Stampede, but is now planning to start a competing promotion. He may get started as soon as May, and he’s planning to run Calgary too.
  • World Class is negotiating to get their syndicated package added to the All-Star Wrestling Network ad package. That’s the same one that has the AWA.
  • Big John Studd has sent out a country music demo to some record companies. He’s apparently trying to cash in on his fame as a wrestler as a selling point for how well his record would sell. One person in the music industry told Dave that Studd wrestles better than he sings, and Dave says if it does ever release not to buy it if there are any cats who live in your neighborhood.
  • UWF announced its May 12 Korauken Hall card. There will be three matches: Nobuhiko Takada vs. Shigeo Miyato, Tetsuo Nakano vs. Yoji Anjo, and Akira Maeda vs. Kazuo Yamazaki. That’s the entire stable of wrestlers they have so far. Since they sold out so quick without announcing the card at all, it’s a good thing they’ve saved the best main event they have (Maeda vs. Takada) for June. Since there are only three matches, each match will likely be in the 30 minute range.
  • Dave hears word that Iron Sheik will be back in WWF if he can clean up his act. No more cocaine for Sheiky baby.
  • AWA has an interesting card for their May 14 tapings in Las Vegas. Tanaka and Diamond defend the tag titles against Chavo and Mando Guerrero, Greg Gagne defends the International TV title against Brian Knobbs, the Midnight Rockers take on Riki Choshu and Masahiro Saito, and Curt Hennig vs. Jerry Lawler for the AWA Word Title.
  • In addition to Memphis and the AWA, Continental now recognizes the AWA Title as a world title. The AWA title is quickly becoming the world title of the remaining independent territories. Related, in a recent interview Curt Hennig said that he’s the real world champion among himself, Ric Flair, and Randy Savage because they only defend their titles in one company while Hennig defends his in all companies.
  • The Fantastics beat the Midnight Express on April 26 in Chattanooga to win the NWA US Tag Titles in a 40+ minute match. They teased referee stoppage and Bobby Eaton, who was the illegal man, wound up pinning Robert Fulton. Cornette did a promo saying he was planning a party for this coming weekend because of course Jim Crockett would return the belts, but obviously that’s not going to happen, Dave says.
  • Ric Flair missed some shows this past week (April 25 in Nashville and Chattanooga, April 27, and April 28. Dave’s heard two stories - either a severe fever or a staph infection. Due to his absence, the NWA offered refunds for those who wanted them. He was supposed to wrestle Road Warrior Hawk in Nashville, and that show drew around 2,500 people.
  • Dave thinks it’ll be interesting to see if WWF tries counterprogramming the next NWA ppv. It’s set to air on July 10 with Flair vs. Luger and a triple tower of doom match (they should be glad that WCCW is using it first, it means they can see how it actually works in practice and figure out the bugs before doing it themselves). Correction time: the triple tower of doom WCCW has concocted wasn’t a Dusty Rhodes original. It was a Kevin Sullivan idea, which makes way more sense when I remember the doomsday cage match he came up with. Anyway, Dave thinks it would be smart if both stopped this game of countering each other’s big shows. It’s just costing both sides a lot of money and neither side has really benefited.
  • The 1988 NWA Great American Bash tour will run June 26-August 7 and have some 40 or 41 shows. A lot of those shows will have War Games matches. After the Bash tour, Crockett’s wrestlers are going to be getting a week off to make up for working 6 weeks straight.
  • NWA got the time slot WCCW used to have in Jackson, Mississippi and their first tape they sent had no commentary track. They had promos, but not one word of commentary.
  • Word is that a 6’7” masked wrestler called “The Texan” is coming to NWA to feud with Dusty Rhodes. Dave thinks they’re bringing in Dick Murdoch, who once wore a mask and attacked Rhodes, but 6’7”? Maybe if he had stilts.
  • WWF is instituting a new policy where managers aren’t being booked for house shows anymore, only tv tapings. The only exceptions are where they’re booked to actually get in the ring and wrestle a match. Elizabeth is a unique case, and Dave’s not sure where they’re landing on her yet, but she’s so integral to Randy Savage’s act that you can’t take her out without upsetting fans. The last Dave’s heard is they’re likely to have her only appear in certain markets and not regularly anymore.
  • Additionally, WWF has made significant cuts to the number of dates. Last year at this point they were running between 20-25 shows a week, and they’ve cut it down to 10, 12 on tv taping weeks. The new schedule has three shows on Saturdays and Sundays, two on Mondays and Fridays, and Tuesday-Thursday as days off (again, except on tv weeks). Well, that’s the schedule for the big names. The rest will work when they get work, with the third string guys working twice a week at most. With this severe a cutback, you can expect probably more guys to be let go. On the other hand, this new scheduling will give the wrestlers more chance to rest, and seems to be having positive effects on performance (though DiBiase/Savage and Hart/Badnews working together might also be a factor). DiBiase/Savage is the only major drawing match they have, so cutting dates means avoiding overexposing the match, too, so that’s a possible factor. This is evidence that pro wrestling as an arena spectator sport is in the worst place it has been in a long time and even WWF is tightening their belt, which only means that everyone else is probably feeling it a lot more.
  • One of the letters this week is about how fans smart to how the business works should act at shows. Not said in the letter is that they should shower, almost as if that’s a given. Anyway, the writer conjures up the image of the fan who goes to the show and calls the wrestlers by their government names and screams at Wahoo McDaniel to “blade!” when he gets posted and goes prone on the floor and how irritating those people are. Smart fans, our writer argues, should try to keep the heat up for the match. Cheer the faces, boo the heels, help encourage the marks around you to do the same. The writer is friends with a mid-level heel from a promotion not to be specified to protect the source, and the writer tries to make a point of going to that heel’s tv tapings. Some of the wrestler’s colleagues know our writer is an Observer subscriber and considers Dave a friend, but even so, after the last taping the writer went to and played it off like they were a total mark, one of the managers came over and thanked the writer for keeping the heat up and asked for thoughts on the angles and how they were getting over. You don’t get asked questions like that from the workers if you’re the kind of irritating, insufferable smart fan who has to show off how smart you are. Honestly, I really enjoyed this letter, because it definitely jives with my feelings about how to act at a show. Respect and engage with the performance you are presented. I remember going to a RISE show last year where I had a fantastic conversation with AQA, one of the women there who was coming from Booker T’s school, and she was asking me about how her elimination looked from my vantage, if I thought she hit her spots well, and that sort of stuff. I’ve had a lot of great conversations like that at RISE and SHIMMER shows and I’m really glad I got to have that conversation with AQA. By the way, she’s fantastic and is definitely on her way to having a big future once she hits the point of signing with Impact/WWE/AEW.
  • Another writer notes that he has a friend who now works part time for the Rhode Island State Athletic Commission. Said friend knows nothing about wrestling and can’t even answer questions about whether blading is allowed in Rhode Island because he doesn’t know what the question means. So yeah, that’s what you’re dealing with in athletic commissions.
  • Our most interesting letter of the week concerns the origins of the term “working.” A lot of people think it originates with the advent of tv and working for the benefit of the camera, but the term originates back in the early part of the 20th century. Wrestlers began using what they called the “working” system rather than shooting, which allowed them to turn wrestling into a traveling act. Wrestlers at that point still had to be capable shooters, of course, just in case someone didn’t want to go along with the script. And there were wrestlers like Jack Sherry who couldn’t adapt to working rather than shooting, and so they were on the outs with the major promoters of the era. Also, the writer found a membership list for the NWA from 1968. Just 20 years ago the NWA boasted 23 different member promotions in the U.S. and Canada. How much things have changed.
  • There’s a big letter from a couple guys in Maine that goes off on Dave for his “anti-WWF” bias and it’s a big enough deal that Dave actually responds. In brief, the letter says “we are disturbed by your continuing, and, we believe, unwarranted criticism of Titan Sports and Vince McMahon in particular. This anti-Titan attitude, while understandable, and in some cases laudable, has been of concern to us for some time, and we had intended to write soon, but your recent post-Wrestlemania newsletter moved up our timetable.” Fucking hell, that’s most of the opening paragraph and I am rolling laughing (literally, I am high as balls as I do this part). Their criticisms of Dave’s takes on Wrestlemania seem to be saying Ventura was great on commentary and Uecker was funny. And since Dave’s writing basically the newsletter of record on wrestling, he’s being derelict in his responsibilities. One good thing they suggest is that Dave try to keep commentary and news separate. Basically, they usually find themselves agreeing with Dave and are very confused and concerned that his opinions on Clash and Wrestlemania were opposite of theirs. The part that really ticks Dave off is that, “at risk of insulting” Dave, they conclude that his commentaries are tailored to satisfy certain constituencies of his readership rather than reflecting his own opinions. Dave even says that the one thing they got right was that he felt insulted by their letter, and not because they disagree with him. Dave even says “anyone who agrees with all my opinions is obviously letting me do their thinking for him.” There you go. He then gives a complete takedown of every point they made, pointing out where they ignored the context of his statements, pointed out how it wasn’t just him who felt how he did, points out his takes on Starrcade and Survivor Series to kill dead the idea that he has an anti-WWF or pro-Crockett bias, etc. As for biases, Dave does admit to a bias toward Crockett’s in-ring style compared to WWF’s, but it’s also hardly his favorite style (New Japan juniors, there’s his favorite style at this point), and he also admits to a bias toward how WWF handles publicity, its company, and its rotating talent in and out of the spotlight to keep things fresh.
  • So, Dave transcribed the first hour of Bruno Sammartino’s radio interview from 6 weeks back. A couple highlights, then I’ll just put a link to read the transcript yourself. He felt like the lone voice defending the old way of wrestling and nobody would listen. He says some wrestlers today, he might call them athletes, but Bam Bam Bigelow? He’s too fat to be an athlete. He calls Andre and Hogan sad because of Andre’s condition, and even worse because making it out like the match of the century is practically obscene to him. He doesn’t consider either of them to be wrestlers. Basically, he’s going to old man yell at the cloud of modern wrestling for a while and he said Vince doesn’t want commentary to refer to it as wrestling anymore. He tries to maintain some kayfabe about the legitimacy of wrestling in his day, but tries to claim it mostly was. There’s stuff about his son I’m going to be honest about not reading, I’m just not sober enough to care about David. He also says he never once saw a bladejob or blood capsule in his life and points to his scars above his eye “that came from being hit”. He is vague about Jimmy Snuka, but he says Snuka’s got serious drug problems and seriously messed himself up.
Read: Bruno radio interview transcript
  • There’s also a long letter about Bruno, so you can read that along with the transcript So click that link too. Smash that like button. Subscribe to my twitch channel. Words.
Read: end of transcript and letter
  • Dave also gives comments of his own on the transcript, letter, and Sammartino’s issues with McMahon. In short, the business of wrestling has changed a lot, especially lately, and change isn’t inherently bad. Some changes made wrestling more mainstream acceptable. Some caused the decline of regional territories, but were always inevitable. Some brought unheard of amounts of money to the business. Wrestling isn’t shooting, but entertainment isn’t a dirty word and things like wrestlers booking to suit their egos dates back to the 20s. Dave says the wrestlers who have learned to do today’s craft and not an outdated style that won’t connect, should be commended and respected. If you know how to work for your audience, can maintain conditioning, and work hard to get yourself over, you’re the kind of wrestler Dave respects. If you don’t respect the paying customers and think steroids can substitute for knowing your shit, Dave thinks less of you for it. Using steroids doesn’t disqualify you from respect - a lot of great workers are well conditioned and use the stuff to maintain the size that pleases the promoters. He just dead refutes the idea that wrestling was legit in Bruno’s day or that he never bladed. He also talks about Vince and that Vince has on the one hand had a very negative influence on ring style, but he’s opened wrestling up to the larger media landscape and that’s a good thing.
  • Dave rates Savage vs. DiBiase from the April 25 Madison Square Garden show 4 stars. A rare high mark for a WWF match at this point.
Watch: DiBiase vs. Savage at MSG
  • Harley Race will be out for several months. He ruptured his intestine and had to have 18 inches of it removed.
  • Big Bubba’s coming next week with a prison guard gimmick and will likely be built up for Hogan’s return.
  • Owen Hart is now apparently 50-50 on coming to WWF.
  • Ricky Steamboat has apparently quit WWF. He was scheduled for the MSG show against Greg Valentine, but wasn’t there and wasn’t on tv. It could just be a hiatus, but Dave reckons he’s gone.
  • Dave wants us to confirm, but does Matilda look different than she used to?
NEXT WEEK: Midnight Rider unmasked, Jerry Lawler becomes AWA World Champion, Roddy Piper comes to Oregon, Clash II announced for June 8, and more!

2020.10.16 15:05 autotldr Oregon’s only coal-fired power plant closes for good

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 44%. (I'm a bot)
Portland General Electric permanently closed its Boardman coal-fired power plant in Eastern Oregon on Thursday.
The plant closed 20 years ahead of a scheduled early closure date as outlined in a landmark 2010 agreement that was designed to reduce air pollution from the plant.
The plant has been operating 11 miles southwest of Boardman since 1980.The state still gets coal-fired electricity from power plants in other states, but the Boardman plant was the last coal-fired power plant still operating within Oregon.
The utility still gets some coal-fired power from the Coalstrip plant in Montana, where it has partial ownership.
Corson said PGE's power mix was roughly 15% coal-fired power before the Boardman plant closed, and that number will drop to zero by 2035 because of a state mandate for utilities to eliminate the coal-fired power they import from other states.
Much of the power from the Boardman plant will be replaced by hydro power from dams through agreements with Bonneville Power Administration, Washington's Douglas County PUD and other suppliers.

2020.10.11 21:34 tutetibiimperes Nugu Roundup #60 - When Proud Pied April, Dress'd in all his trim, Hath put a Spirit of Youth in Every Thing- 201011 + Album Giveaway

Hello and welcome to the latest Nugu Roundup!
What is this?: This is a weekly feature designed to highlight the unknown/underappreciated groups and soloists working hard in the Kpop world that often fall under the radar. Please share your own information, favorite performance videos, fanmeet stories, or anything else relevant below!
Last week we spent time with Dreamcatcher's little brothers, D1CE! This week let's check out a group that's more on the 'underrated' side than the 'nugu' side, let's get to know April!
Look at the first comment below for the winner of the fourteenth Nugu Roundup Album Giveaway, plus details on this week's album up for grabs!
What is Nugu?: While in Korean it literally means 'Who' in the broader Kpop context it refers to groups that are generally unknown amongst the greater public. It doesn't have to mean they're extremely new, though it can, and there are of course varying degrees of 'unknown' which some groups having very strong niche fandoms and others being almost invisible. I take a fairly broad view and will include groups that may be known to some, but who don't have widespread name recognition.
Let's get on with the show...
________________________________________________________
APRIL
Who are they?: April is a six member girl group under DSP Media. While their name in Hangul 에이프릴 phonetically sounds much like 'April' it's also a compound word of 'A Frill' indicating they are pretty women, and with the April name means they want to present a warm and relaxing atmosphere like the month of April. Their fandom name is Fineapple, which is a combination of "Fine" meaning good, and "Apple" representing April.
Company: DSP Media was originally one of the largest Kpop companies in the game, representing mega-hit artists such as Fin.K.L, SECHSKIES, and KARA. They lost ground in the transition from 2nd to 3rd generation groups and now represent April and co-ed group KARD. They also have a pre-debut 9 member boy group in development including two Produce X101 contestants. Other notable former artists include the girl group Rainbow and boy groups SS501 and A-JAX.

Tenth (and most recent) Comeback: July 29th, 2020 with Now or Never (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)
YouTube Channel: April
Random Stuff
Trivia: On debut April was one of the youngest active Kpop groups, with an average age of 17.5. The group has a mascot, known as Sawori, which is a giant seed representing sprouting love and energy for the group. The group has amassed a number of CF deals including Mexican Chicken (a Korean chicken chain), FIFA Online, and a goat-milk face mask product. Their fandom name was the result of a fan vote and Fineapple narrowly beat out Aries as the top choice. Despite a long hiatus between The Ruby and De Capo the group seems to be gaining momentum, with their special summer album Hello Summer reaching 14,000 physical copies sold, the group's best thus far, while the group had never broken 10K before De Capo. Lalalilala also marked the group's highest single charting at 40 on the Gaon digital chart and 37 on Melon. As a fun little Easter-Egg the first letter of April's first three EPs (Dreaming, Spring, Prelude) spells out "DSP". The group has won three medals at ISAC competitions, all of them for Rhythm Gymnastics. The group is currently one of the longest-running active idol groups that has never won 1st place on a music show.
________________________________________________________
SOLOIST OF THE WEEK
Woosung/Sammy
Who is he?: Woosung is the lead vocalist, guitarist, and leader of the band The Rose. He has released several solo songs and a solo EP but is also still active with his band.
Company: J&Star Entertainment appears to be a new and small company with The Rose being their only musical act, though they also represent a male model and actor by the name of Bonyoung.
Real Name: Kim Woo Sung (Korean) Sammy Kim (English)
Age: 27 (IA)
Pre-Release Debut: July 19th, 2019 with Lonely (audio) Live Performance (Link)
Official Solo Debut: July 25th, 2019 with Face (MV) Live Performance (Link)
First Comeback: November 15th, 2019 with Beautiful Girl feat. Penile (MV) Live Performance (Link)
YouTube Channel: via The Rose
Trivia: He is from Los Angeles, CA. He competed on the first season of Kpop Star. He participated in the writing and production of the song Yolo from Boys24 (link). His role model for The Rose is The Beatles, a band that showed both vocal talent as well as creativity. During the album cover shooting for his Wolf EP they used a real wolf-dog for the photos, and he says it was difficult because the wolf-dog did not listen to commands and kept wanting to wander away. He is close to BM of KARD and Ashley of Ladies Code due to their US upbringing. When he was young he watched a video of Angus Young of AC/DC and loved the look of the guitar so made one himself out of shoelaces and a toy sword he had. His mother ended up buying him a guitar after that, though it wasn't until he was injured while playing football in high school that he decided to devote his energies fully into music. ________________________________________________________
IN MEMORIAM
VERMUDA
Who were they?: A five member boy group under Pacemaker Entertainment. Their name in Hangul is spelled the same way as the island of Bermuda. Their fandom name was Triangle, the same as the title of their debut EP.
Debut: June 12th, 2017 with Dream Girl (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)
Final Release: February 13th, 2018 with Farewell (audio)
Active Between: June 2017 - Sometime in 2019
Reasons for Disbanding: All of the groups social media accounts were deleted or went silent, which combined with no output since 2018 leads to the likelihood that the group has quietly disbanded. No other groups or information can be found for the group's company Pacemaker Entertainment, so it's possible the company folded as well.
Trivia: The group featured former members of 100%, ZPZG (which is rumored to be reforming), and Mr. Slam. Member NaKang who contributed to the writing of their final track is a cousin of KiKwang from Highlight. The group had previously been known as BEAM. It appears that they attempted to do live touring internationally including in China and Japan during 2018.
________________________________________________________
That's it for today, let's get the discussion on!
As always, if you have any suggestions for groups, content, or things you'd like to see, please let me know in the comments below.
Also as always, a big shout-out to u/not-named-in-credits for founding nugutown and u/sharnaranwan for continuing the work over there.

2020.10.10 15:30 VeganMinecraft $$ Craigslist Studies + $10 Amazon Giveaway $$

GIVEAWAY OVER Congratz to wc1981
Here are some craigslist studies going on right now. I plan to do these weekly. I do not post “Chances to win” as I believe that EVERYONE should be paid for their time so I only post ones where they pay everyone that qualifies. I sincerely hope this is appreciated as it does take me a bit to compile and sift through dead and garbage links and surveys. As always, if something sounds fishy, don’t do it. I can’t vouch for ALL the links.
PRO TIP: For Research Studies in Your area that pay in cash (there are often quite a lot so too long and too time consuming to post everything from each state here. Would take me all day) go to your craigslist site and type in "research" or "survey" and look under community, gigs or jobs.
FOR RESEARCHERS WHO COME ACROSS THIS POST: First, I hope you are able to deal with the amount of people contacting you. Unfortunately we have no control over bots or false responses. Second, would you please list more information in your craigslist post? Most of the studies I come across are missing valuable information, such as when the study starts, when it ends, minimum age requirements, location requirements, how you will be contacted if you qualify, how your information is protected, etc. Your research studies often are associated with "higher education" universities so it makes no sense why these details would be left out. Please be thorough so people here know what they are getting into and think of it less to be a scam.
Most of these studies pertain to the U.S but there are probably a few that may take international participants if you ask.
GIVEAWAY! Reddit Raffler will choose one commenter to win $10 Amazon. Thanks to GetUpside. If you want more giveaways make sure to use the referral link in the sticky! Open to lurkers and international if U.S. amazon gift cards work for you. Account must be 3+ months old. Just drop a line. :) Will close tonight EST.

2020.10.06 13:55 ZandrickEllison Offseason Blueprint: the Oklahoma City Thunder fought off a rebuild for another year, but a new era will be necessary eventually

The NBA Finals are starting to heat up, but there are now 28 teams sitting at home with nothing to do but twiddle their thumbs and wait for next season to start.
For their sake, we wanted to look ahead with the next edition of the OFFSEASON BLUEPRINT series. In each, we'll preview some big decisions and make some recommendations for plans of attack along the way. Today, we're looking at the Oklahoma City Thunder.
step one: back it up but don't blow it up
By all accounts, the Oklahoma City Thunder blew it up. They traded Russell Westbrook, they traded Paul George. BOOM goes the dynamite. The ember and ashes scattered all over the wreckage, signaling the end of an era of playoff contention.
However, the team didn't get the memo. Chris Paul and company emerged from the flames, walking tall and proud and unscathed. Their 44-28 record was actually better than the prior season (with Westbrook and MVP candidate George). While they didn't win in the playoffs, they gave the Houston Rockets all they could handle in a tough seven-game series.
If the Thunder wanted to run it back, they could be a good team again. But to what end...? Another R1 loss? It's hard to envision them being the favorite in a first-round series out West, which should be as strong as ever.
To be clear, making the playoffs and losing in R1 isn't an awful fate. If you're a small market team like OKC, it's a reasonable goal and a lifeline for your franchise. Maybe Sam Presti and the team want to keep chugging along as long as possible and use their new draft picks to supplement the team.
Moreover, blowing it up (for real this time) isn't going to be terribly easy. Chris Paul still has a massive contract ($41M + $44M player option.) Steven Adams is still on the books for another year at $27.5M. Dennis Schroeder is on the books for $15.5M. If your goal is to bottom out, it could be hard to scramble and find appropriate trades for them all.
Still, taking a step back feels like the most reasonable plan. Chris Paul has rehabbed his reputation and trade value and may actually be on the positive side of the asset ledger now. If you trade him, you also allow more of an opportunity for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to slide back to a PG-SG role. According to basketball-reference, SGA only played 6% of his minutes at PG this year. He's capable of playing "up" as a SG or SF, but you'd be taking away the size advantage that represents one of his better virtues as a guard. If OKC is going to be a good team in 2022 and 2023 and beyond, Gilgeous-Alexander will likely be playing a lead guard role.
Even though CP3 looked good this year, it's never easy to trade someone with a $40M contract. The trade partners may be limited. Allegedly, the New York Knicks are considering it (for whatever reason.) Philadelphia and Milwaukee would make more sense as "win now" teams. Who knows -- maybe a team like Miami or Orlando decides they need Paul to help push them to another level. In any circumstance, I'd expect the trade return to be modest. You may get a mid to late R1 pick -- you may get nothing at all. But the decision to trade CP3 or not should have more to do with finding a direction for the franchise than haggling for prices.
step two: embrace the youth movement and prep for the long haul
If the plan is to take a step back (which Sam Presti has not signed off on yet, by the by), then the trickle down effect could be felt across the roster.
If the team isn't pushing strong for the playoffs next year, then re-signing FA Danilo Gallinari doesn't make much sense. He's played well enough over the last two years to justify close to $20M a season in a short-term deal. The Thunder can utilize that to potentially swing a "sign and trade" for him. Teams like Portland would love to have a sweet-shooting forward like that on their team. Presumably, OKC can get an additional R1 pick if they trade Gallo and take on a bad contract in return.
Losing Gallo would also open the door for more minutes for current-rookie Darius Bazley. On paper, Bazley struggled as much as you could expect from an inexperienced 19 year old (who just turned 20 in June.) Still, the "eye test" suggests an athletic kid with good stretch potential. If the Thunder push their timeline back, then developing Bazley will become more of a priority for them.
As long as we're taking a step back (call it peeling off layers as opposed to a total teardown), then the Thunder can float offers for Dennis Schroder and Steven Adams as well. However, trading them isn't mandatory. They're both 27 years old, which is a stark difference from Chris Paul (35) and Gallinari (32).
Even if we lose some veterans, we can see the outline of a team that makes sense here. You'd have Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as a focal point combo guard. You'd have People's Champ Lu Dort as your go-to defender. You'd have Darius Bazley working his way into a potential starting role down the road. Still, this feels more like a supporting cast than a perpetual playoff team. OKC may be one signature star away from completing this next phase.
It'll be hard for Oklahoma City to draw in that future franchise player in free agency, and it'll be hard for them to do with their draft pick this year ( # 25). Fortunately, they're going to have a lot of swings at the plate in the years to come. They own their own picks after this year, as well as a boatload of future R1 picks via the Westbrook and George trades.
Overall, this is a team that needs to be thinking with a long-term approach. Even if they want to roll it back and try to make the playoffs this next season, they'll need to start the next era eventually.
step three: get back out on the dating market and get re-married
The uncertainty about the future (and perhaps the inevitability of the rebuild) helped spur coach Billy Donovan to travel elsewhere. In his place, the team will need to find a coach who has the patience and skill set for a long-term plan.
We haven't heard much about the Oklahoma City coaching search, which makes sense since they are not likely to spend a ton to find a big name. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if they default to someone like current assistant Mo Cheeks as a cheap placeholder. If the team decides to keep the core together, an experienced coach like that makes some sense.
More likely, they're try to find a younger coach who can take the reins for the foreseeable future. There are a ton of quality prospects in that ilk. Among them: Ime Udoka (PHI), Stephen Silas (DAL), Wes Unseld Jr. (DEN), Nate Tibbetts (POR), Jay Larranaga (BOS), Chris Fleming (CHI), Darvin Ham (MIL), Nate Bjorkgren (TOR), Becky Hammon (SA), and Alex Jensen (UTA). Bigger names like Kenny Atkinson and Dave Joerger make some sense as well, although they'd be more expensive given their prior experience.
Given the supply and demand, the Thunder can take their time and be thorough in their search. They need to find someone who can be in lockstep with Presti going forward. In a sense, Presti is going to have to go on a bunch of speed dates and propose to someone at the end of the night. They want this marriage to last for the next 5+ years or more.
Without the benefit of being in the room for those interviews (or having any basketball experience at all), it seems like Ime Udoka would be at the top of the list. While he doesn't have head coaching experience yet, he's been knocking on that door for some time. He's built up a good resume, with experience as a player, as an assistant in San Antonio, and as an assistant for Team USA. He checks the box for a developmental coach, but also would have some credibility as a former player to connect with veterans like Chris Paul (if he stays put.)
step four: prepare for the future with more modern basketball as well
With Chris Paul taking the lead role, the Oklahoma City Thunder were a good team. They were also an old-fashioned team by the standards of their offensive shot distribution. They finished 27th (out of 30) in three-point attempts. It made sense for this team to take advantage of their midrange game when they had CP3 in tow, but that needs to change if they play without him in the future. Not hitting threes puts you at a natural disadvantage. It's no surprise that -- as talented as the team was -- they only finished 16th in offensive rating this year. They arguably outplayed Houston in the playoffs as well, but 3s are going to beat 2s in a larger sample.
Increasing your 3PA isn't going to be easy if the team loses Danilo Gallinari in free agency (or sign-and-trade). They don't have great shooters lined up waiting in the wings either.
Practically, there are a few steps that OKC can take to increase their three-point shooting. For one, they need to limit the amount of defensive stoppers they have in the rotation. Free agent Andre Roberson still has a lot of defensive potential, but he's never going to be a great offensive player. Now that you have Lu Dort locked up under a team-friendly contract, it doesn't make a world of sense to double dip with another defense-only player. If Roberson wants to re-sign for a very cheap deal, that's great. But realistically, his days with the Thunder may be over.
Similarly, SG Terrance Ferguson needs to step up his offense in order to merit extended minutes. He's a solid defender, but he's a 3+D player who hasn't been hitting threes reliably. Last season, he sagged to 29% beyond the arc. Ferguson is still a young player (age 22), but next season will be his 4th in the NBA. Unless we see signs that he's going to get notably better, then he may need to have a reduced role. Effectively, OKC needs to pit Ferguson and Dort against each other to see who justifies minutes. Playing both (and/or Andre Roberson) is going to make their offense tougher sledding.
Free agent center Nerlens Noel is a trickier proposition. On face value, he's another player with limited offense that won't help boost the team on that end. Still, the fleet-footed Noel has always been undervalued by the NBA, so the Thunder should keep him as long as he's at his typical bargain prices.
All in all, the Thunder will need to add more shooting and more offensive talent eventually. As nice of a story as their 2019-20 season turned out to be, it was more of a bridge to the future than a permanent fixture.

2020.10.05 16:59 kingdova123 Can I salvage this or should I let go

Hello internet peoples.
for those who just want to get to the important stuff skip to paragraph 6
I posted this last night but I had a few issues so I'm reposting it today
my name is Aaron I am 16, ill be 17 next month. I've been on reading/watching Reddit for a while now but I only joined a month ago. a little something about me. I have had a rough childhood. not as bad as some but not amazing, I'm definitely... different because of it but that's for another story. so I'm a first-year wrestler in the state of Maine and I'm an apprentice learning how to become a butcher. I'm a loud type of personality and I have some mental problems after my time in Florida (moved there for 2 years, the worst time of my life. for another time) nothing diagnosed but it's obvious. I'm very slow at reading, understanding, and processing information and I f*ck up my words when I talk. I will just get my words completely messed up, sometimes ill slur my words sometimes ill be thinking something else and all say a half-made mix of those words. I try to be happy but I'm not very good at it. either way on to the story.
so this all starts sometime between the age of 9-11 about a girl we will call Kay (fake name) I'm not 100 percent sure on when. we went camping to celebrate something I have no clue what we went camping I'm not sure where. when we were there my mother saw a tent-shaped like a teepee. She gets excited over that kind of thing so she goes up to the teepee and asks the people where did you get that. So they start talking about the tent while I'm standing there. Little did I know just around the bush were two girls. One was named kay (fake name) and the younger one was name was sandy (also fake) I got bored so I headed back to my tent, 10 minutes later mother comes back saying "they're nice people can't they asked if you would like me to go water tubing" I've never been so excited. my mother said "they will meet you at the beach" me and my brother go to the beach and wait for them. So a couple of minutes pass and I see this amazingly beautiful girl start walking towards the beach and her sister mind you, Towards us. I don't know how she knew it was us but we both knew somehow. I didn't say anything about it but I feel we both felt a connection. She walked up to us and gave us a greeting. It was almost like it was out of a movie. Like I was seeing it from a screen. We went tubing it had a good time for that week. She was up from Bar Harbor and I lived in Bowdoinham. 4 hours apart. I knew I could never leave without knowing who she was or having her a part of my life. We exchanged writing addresses. pen pals. at some point we got Gmail. then Instagram. then Snapchat. it would be until next year to see each other. her parents own a hotel so they were well. (here is where I get confused. I'm not sure in which order I've seen her so I'll do my best pieces together. Sorry folks)
in the summer between School, I and she decided we should meet. to see each other because it has been so long. At that point, we talked every day or every other day. Show them being 4 hours away we decided to meet them halfway at a gas station. My parents said hello to theres and then we headed out to their winter home. we got there got our stuff ready and headed to bed that night I was so nervous I threw up in my sleep. So I slept shirtless on the recliner. I don't know where my brother slept. In the morning we went out sledding. The way home we were in the store when she's got me a bag full of Courts and Fool's Gold I have those till this day. Something cute, she always misspells my name. I got home and I didn't see her again till next summer. The only reason this is relevant to the story it's because get my entire life I've probably only seen her five or six times.
Next summer I believe we went to a hockey game. It was a one-night affair. we met at my house I was so excited I wanted to show her around. You didn't have time to so we just left. The entire trip there me my brother didn't say working a couple of words, neither did kay or her sister. we hand nothing to say. we didn't know what to say in person. it was always so easy through text. this happened in person every time after this point. so we head to the portland mall because there was a food quart there we ate and got back in the truck. we went out back and they asked me if I needed a coat. I didn't bring one so the mother went in and bought me a Colombia jacket. an expensive one at that so. thank you, Daniella... either way. while their mother was inside the father hopped out of the truck and after a minute kay joins him. so when she gets out he sister looks at me and says. "you know she likes you right" inside I was the happiest I ever was. with a shit-eating grin I said yeah I know. pretending as she meant as a friend. don't know why I did that. she says "I mean more than a friend" I just said oh.. then everyone got back in and we headed to the game. we got there just as it started. or ended idk. they said "we have a surprise for you guys" and when we got there we headed down to where the hockey players enteexit. after that we went to the gift shop and got some stuff. I got a hockey puck. mia was wired from the coffee she had before she left and on the way home we kept making jokes about it finally talking to one another. as we pull up to our house I get out and my brother says give her a hug. I was blushing and I said no. I never hugged her. that still stands in my memory to this day. it was such a small thing to not hug her but... I didn't... I wish so bad that I did.
I got a birthday letter from her saying happy 12 birthday. she also said she was heading to Thailand for a vacation. I had that for years. I left that in Florida with the rest of my shit and I regret not taking it with me. another year passes and we decide to meet up again. this is another part I'm hazy on. we are going to portland to go on the polar express. we go to the hotel to drop off our stuff (i think) and on the way there I find out that she's learning how to crochet and sign language. not important just neat. so we go and we ride the train. it was pretty cool. I don't remember I single thing about the fucking train. or if there even was one. all I remember well as we headed back to the hotel and there was a pool so. we go upstares change up and I'm terrified because I'm about to take my shirt off in front of this girl that I'm so.. enthralled with. so I do and we get swimming so does my brother and everyone having a good time I and kay were playing about and maybe it was just me but I could feel her dad's silence judgment. either way we got out and went upstares to our room me kay sandy me are just sitting on a bed talk then the mom leads me and my brother to the living room to the cots. we all go to bed and after that, we wake up and head home. from what I remember (which im probably forgetting stuff) this is the last time I saw her in person.
a little time passes and I get a phone call from kay. my mother hands me the phone. she asked me what I was up to. I was playing Minecraft and like a dumbass, I said "oh I'm hunting herobrien" either way we keep talking and in the background of her phone a can hear people talking. then she said something along the lines of "I like you" or something. she asked me if I felt the same. I said yes. immediately afterward I heard a bunch of either laughing or squealing. IDK. we soon hung up and mark these words WE DID NOT CLARIFY ANYTHING. ANYTHING. we never said "are we dating" or "what's going to happen now" so... I was under the impression we were dating. !WE WERE NOT! remember this please for the love of fucking god please remember this.
so we haven't seen each other in a couple of years now after this me my mother my father and my brother Tyler move to Florida. I didn't know why at first. they said because "we need a fresh start" or "we need warmer whether we want to survive the cold" to that I say bullshit they both did it there entire life. what has changed? ill tell ya. drugs! my mother might have committed an act of questionable legality at her old job. I'm not 100 percent on the reason we moved but it was probably that. I would tell you everything that happened in Florida but this would be the longest blog in history. if you guys want to hear about that tell me and ill post about it. so after my first year in Florida. the worst years of my existence thus far due to my mother's substance abuse and my father was probably bipolar. because he screamed at me almost every day or every other day which both of those have taken a huge hit on my mental state plus the fact that I had no friends because at 14-15 years of age I wasn't in school for 2 years. my brother dropped out and the rest of my family refer to him as "the gangster one" because he talks with a low pitch accent. I'm getting off point. either way after about 3 years of "DATING" this girl I finally get the courage to say to her I love you. just remember she was the only friend a had at all. all I had was an Xbox 360, 20 broken games, and a completely broken phone we shared between four of us. she was one of the only reasons I didn't lose my shit. so to cope I almost deified her. I thought her to be a star. I never ever thought ill of her. I brainwashed myself to never think like that about her. so when I said I love you I guess she thought I meant as a friend. we never clarified what we were. I just always assume we were dating. she.... she did not. one night I finally asked her "have you ever thought about our first kiss," I thought to myself oh that's so clever. I was a dumbass. I was watching a gmod video and I saw this entire blob of text across the top of my screen. my face dropped I knew it was bad. so I read it... and I cried and cried. and then some more and more. I couldn't remember what it said but. it was basically. I don't want to ruin our friendship over a relationship. I'm kind of happy she did say something though. it must have been horrid not knowing if you're in a relationship or not. for me it was terrible but I was so used to pain... I just don't want her to be traped. I'm happy shes at least clear now. I'm happy she didn't have to know what was happening. every once in a while I would cry like a bitch expecting sympathy from her. I just forced my problems onto her. I shouldn't have done that but it's done.
after all of this, I didn't talk to her for a week or two. I told her I need a little time. I talked to her. but.. we slowly started to talk less and less. so first it was us missing every other day then three or four days. at its worst, it was 3 weeks without talking to her. then I moved back to Maine... and my brother told her that I wasn't in school. that bad stuff was happening. I never told her because I knew at my core that I'm a horrid person. I didn't want her to know and I never knew how to tell her what was happening. I was forced to. I know the time for a relationship was over. now I just want back my friend back. I told her I needed a break from our friendship hoping that time would give us something to talk about. it hasnot. its been 14 weeks. 3 1/2 months since we talked its been about a year 1/2- since we "broke up" but I'm so embarrassed to tell people that I fucked up that bad. yesterday was an international boyfriend day. she posted a picture of her boyfriend. I've been sad for a couple of days. I don't mind that she has a boyfriend now. but if he mistreats her I'm heading up to his place I swear it. since Florida, I've got a girlfriend whom I love. our 6 month anniversary in 3 days and I feel like the worst boyfriend on the planet. my point is I don't know if I can live my life without kay. I don't want a girlfriend anymore. I just want my friend back. the one I talked to every day. the one whos have been there my entire life. one of the few people I care about. and I do not know if we can fix our friendship.
I'm so sorry for such a long post. its taken me 3 hours to write. so I suppose I should ask my questions now...
is there a way to fix this. is it a lost cause and my second question. I'm an asshole? I've never been a good friend but now that I don't have her as a friend I'm complete f*cked

2020.10.04 20:17 KestrelGirl Augusta Holmès – La Nuit et l’amour

Welcome back to another episode of “Kestrel introduces everyone to obscure music that’s actually kinda cool, at least in her opinion.” I’m your host, KestrelGirl. I made these two things. And I am so, so, so excited to now be bringing you all a piece by a woman composer.
Augusta Holmès (1847-1903) was a French composer of Irish descent. Fiercely independent as the sole heir to her military officer father’s estate, she published under her own name (after starting out under a male pseudonym for a little while) and owned the rights to her work. She studied with Cesar Franck, befriended Franz Liszt, and generally walked with the best of the best in the artistic circles of Paris. She was also notoriously attractive, so the mingling was… also fairly literal. “We were all in love with her,” reminisced Camille Saint-Saens (who wasn’t typically infatuated with women). Though she never married in order to preserve her autonomy, she did have a long relationship and five children with poet Catulle Mendès.
While a sizeable portion of Holmès’ oeuvre is made up of songs and smaller choral works, the best way to describe her style is that she wrote big. Very big, in a very French way, and typically intensely patriotic and political… in a time when women were supposed to write softer, homier things if they composed at all. Surprisingly, La Nuit et l’amour (Night and Love), as charming as it is, is no exception to the composer's so-called virility. On top of the already massive orchestration (four bassoons!), it’s part of a longer 1888 work called Ludus pro patria (Patriotic Games), which is inspired by a mural painting of the same name, involves even larger orchestral forces and a choir, features text written by Holmès herself, and has not been recorded in full. This particular interlude has been recorded on its own, but only twice. Out of the two recordings, we’ll be playing along with the Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic. This was the first-ever recording of this piece; it takes some mild liberties by adding an organ (or a harmonium?), but that’s not in the actual score, so don’t mind that there isn’t a part for it. If you want to hear the other recording of this piece with original instrumentation, check out this recording from the Orchestre de l'Opéra de Lyon.
The hunt for the sheet music to this piece has been an exciting and at times frustrating one. None of the original score to Ludus pro patria is on IMSLP or any public domain resource; there are parts to an arrangement of La Nuit for string quartet, organ, and piano, as well as a piano and choir reduction of all of Ludus, but of course that’s not quite right, so I had to go digging. Through an especially helpful friend, I was able to reach the assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony, which performed the piece at the start of 2020, but even he couldn’t get access. Nor could the librarian for the Portland Symphony, scheduled to perform it in early 2021, current situation willing. I eventually turned up information on a professor at Brown University, Mark Seto, who’d prepared performance materials for La Nuit several years ago. He let me know that Holmès’ will requests that none of her work be published for the first time posthumously. While that’s the reason this has been such a goose chase, and it may also be impossible to provide any engraving of the piece to IMSLP in good faith, I am able to distribute Prof. Seto’s transcription to all of you thanks to his generosity.
Lastly, I want to mention that this project is dedicated to the memory of United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I’ll be using the video to list an array of charities aimed at promoting equality and social justice for women, including trans women.
If you have questions or need help, feel free to ask here, or join me and everyone else on the Discord!

Below is the sheet music for this piece.

Thank you to (the aforementioned) Prof. Mark Seto for providing the score. I’ve re-transcribed it myself in order to add back two omitted bassoon parts, fix various engraving quibbles, and allow people to access XMLs and transposed parts as needed. All credit, however, still goes to him.

Percussion and Misc.
  • Harp (1, 2)
  • Timpani
Strings
  • Violin 1 (divisi)
  • Violin 2 (divisi)
  • Viola (divisi)
  • Cello (divisi)
  • Double Bass (divisi)

Performance Notes:

  • General: A = 442 Hz. Go absolutely wild with the schmaltz on this piece. All the emotions.
  • Some Markings You Might Not Recognize: sospirando = sighing; son d’echo = like an echo
  • Winds and Horns: Some of the engraving is a little bit wacky with regards to ties and note lengths, but that’s taken straight from the original manuscript, so not entirely my fault. There’s no fancy legato tonguing shenanigans or anything.
  • Flutes and Clarinets: I’m treating the duets at C and D as solo opportunities. The best take of each part will be featured!
  • Horn 1: There’s a passage at the end with a bunch of accents. It’s articulation, not volume. Again, straight from the manuscript.
  • Trumpets: Are scored in D thanks to the rest of Ludus being mostly more friendly to D trumpets. I have provided Bb and C parts, but you are literally playing for five bars. Don’t worry too much about it.
  • Strings: Fixed engraving errors on 10/5; please redownload if you grabbed the parts on day 1. Tasteful glissando on big shifts is welcomed. Every single double stop is marked as or can be played divisi; even the basses have it (!). As usual, if you need help, feel free to ask me!
  • Violins: You need mutes - you know, the little rubber kind that is very inexpensive in case you need one. Please follow sul G markings if at all possible. In case measures 9-24 are tripping you up: you’re trilling between the two marked notes for a beat (violin 1 on beat 2, violin 2 on beat 3); don’t cross strings as part of this. The augmented fourths are a bit awkward for those with smaller hands like myself, but they’re a bit better if you move your elbow under, as you would while shifting up.
  • Cellos: At G, in a real-life setting this would be four-part divisi. Just pick one of either the top two or bottom two notes (depending on which 2-part div you’re playing at the time). If you’re an Audacity or DAW user, you can multitrack the extra note in (which note you add would depend on whether you’re top or bottom divisi for the rest of the piece), but please make sure you’re in tune on both, because it’s not easily possible for me to correct intonation on anything that isn’t monophonic.

2020.10.02 04:06 laniakea31 Closing on a Home with Simple Bank

Hello Reddit,
I am trying to close on a home right now, my first one. Escrow needs verifiable funds to close which means wire transfer or cashier's check. Mortgage company already gave clear to close, so we must use the account that we showed them the cash is in, which is Simple. We need to close in 4 days, and we've already requested an extension because the mortgage company was late to close.
Simple doesn't do wire transfers (we found this out while signing with our notary), so we're stuck with a cashier's check. But even when rushing the check, it's going to get there 2 days after the close date. We may be able to get another extension, but my realtor is nervous because the Market is so hot and they already gave us some sweet concessions.
Anyone have any options to make this go faster? Can I fly somewhere to pick the check up (Portland or Birmingham)? Really don't want to lose this home.

UPDATE:
Escrow had a MoneyGram account, so we ended up going to Walmart with my debit card a few days in a row. I had to use my debit card to withdraw pay for the transaction, and the daily limit for your debit card is $6000.
To any future home buyers banking with Simple: do not plan on using Simple for closing on your home. Telling our mortgage company and home builder that our bank did not support wire transactions really hurt us because it sounded so absurd to them. "Who ever heard of a bank that doesn't wire money?" We had a really difficult time working with everyone involved because this hangup made everyone skeptical about our financial position.
Simple customer service, though nice on the phone, had their hands completely tied. They could do absolutely nothing for us (expediting the check, increase any spend limits, suggest any useful alternatives).
I strongly recommend having a second bank account with a bank that has customer service who you can see in person. Don't wait until you buy a home to open this account. Be sure that this second bank account supports wire transactions, and make sure your loan processor knows about this bank account. Put your cash in this account before you get into contract.

2020.09.25 14:36 VisibleConfusion69 Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc- If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act

Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc – If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act
Dear Steve,
On June 1, you shared a letter on Reddit’s blog “Remember the Human – Black Lives Matter”. In this letter, you claim “as Snoos, we do not tolerate hate, racism, and violence, and while we have work to do to fight these on our platform, our values are clear.”
As of today, neither you nor any other Reddit admins have shared this letter anywhere on reddit.com. However, the response to this message was swift on Twitter, where you were rightfully labeled as hypocritical based on your long and well-recorded history of defending racism and white supremacy on this site.
Among the many responses was this message from former CEO of Reddit, Ellen Pao.
I am obligated to call you out: You should have shut down the_donald instead of amplifying it and its hate, racism, and violence. So much of what is happening now lies at your feet. You don't get to say BLM when reddit nurtures and monetizes white supremacy and hate all day long
Many others shared links and screenshots of your past statements saying “Open racism and slurs are fine to post on Reddit”.
The problem of Reddit’s leadership supporting and providing a platform for racist users and hateful communities has long been an issue. Nearly six years ago, dozens of subreddits signed the original open letter to the Reddit admins calling for action. While the Reddit admins acknowledged the letter and said it was a high priority to address this issue, extremely little has been done in the intervening years.
On June 5, you shared this update on /Announcements, Upcoming changes to our content policy, our board, and where we’re going from here. In the post, you stated that there is a need for continued adjustments of Reddit’s content policy to address racism and that this remains a priority. These continued statements that you hear us, that this is a priority, or that you are working on it are not enough. It has been five years since your return as CEO and this still remains Reddit’s most glaring problem.
Steve, if you and Reddit genuinely care about the values of standing up to racism and hate, then you need to back it up with real action. As moderators on this website who have dedicated countless hours to keeping this site running, we call on Reddit to take the following steps:
At /AgainstHateSubreddits, we have laid out the many failures of Steve time and again to stand up to white supremacy on this site time and time and time again.
With a website with the impact of Reddit on the broader conversations being held in communities around the world, this website needs real leadership and real action.
We hope that Reddit will not just share empty platitudes — but will take a meaningful stand against hate, and take these recommendations to heart.
This letter is co-signed by more than 200 300 350 430 550 650 800 communities representing well over 200 hundreds of millions of subscribers:

2020.09.25 13:17 House_of_Suns /r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 21: ALL THEM WITCHES

Let me ask you a question. If you haven’t listened to Kyuss, are you even a QotSA fan?
I suppose it is possible. Some people can be Peter Gabriel fans without being Genesis fans, or Ozzy Osbourne fans without being Black Sabbath fans, or Audioslave fans without being fans of Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine. And I am pretty sure that there are Foo Fighters fans out there who are not fans of Nirvana -- probably because Foo Fighters are a way better band than Nirvana.
Yeah, I said it. Come at me.
But QotSA without Kyuss? I can’t see it. Maybe I am biased because I just love the low desert sound. Heavy riffs, lots of fuzz ,and earthquake-inducing bass are my jam. That’s why I love Self-Titled so much and why I feel 18 A.D. is chronically underappreciated as a song, and it is an absolute crime that they don’t play it live.
I know I am not alone in this. Kyuss were a genre defining band that created what we now call Stoner Rock. Bands like Valley of the Sun, King Buffalo, Truckfighters, Stonerror, Sleep, Clutch, Mother Engine, Mondo Generator, Duel, and Fu Manchu all continue to write and perform Stoner Rock today. If you haven’t taken a dive into this scene, I totally envy the fact that you get to experience this music for the first time.
Today we are going to check out a great Stoner Rock band that just dropped a new album a few weeks ago. They have more fuzz than a five day backwoods fishing trip. They have bigger jams than Smucker’s, Welch’s, and Kraft combined. They will make your one-hitter hit a home run. You are gonna want to roll down the windows of your low riding caddy and drive all night through the desert.
Yep, you are in for a treat. This week’s band is ALL THEM WITCHES.
About Them
You are familiar with the Hero’s journey, right? That is the literary trope where our protagonists leave their comfortable little world, are mentored through a series of increasing challenges, find themselves at a low point, overcome obstacles, and return home greater and wiser than before?
As with every story of heroes, our group of adventurers from Nashville Tennessee went on a truly epic journey. Drummer Robby Staebler had just arrived in Nashville from Portland, Oregon and was looking for some buds to start a band. He had rolled up at his new home in the back of a moving van, because his mom had decided that he was just not good enough to ride up front. His dad was conspicuously absent. After meeting a sketchy male role model with a Smashmouth-esque chinstrap beard, he was forced by this would-be academic to enslave a small animal. He then ran away from home to engage in a series of escalating gladiatorial fights for money.
Wait. Shit. That is the plot of Pokemon Emerald, not the story of All Them Witches. Damn free emulators. Such a massive time sink.
Mudkip for the win. You are damn right I’m bringing back that meme.
Where was I? I kinda got distracted there. Oh yeah. Robby Staebler was looking for a band. He met guitarist Ben McLeod in a bar (remember when we could meet people in bars?) and then met aspiring drama student Charles Michael Parks Jr. when he took a job at “a corporate hippie store”. Parks Jr. turned those theatre aspirations into being a great frontman and bass player. The band rounded out their membership with Allan Van Cleave, a friend of Staebler, on keys. All Them Witches took the inspiration for their name from the set-prop book entitled All of Them Witches in the 1968 Roman Polanski Spawn-of-Satan movie Rosemary’s Baby.
Let’s get something else out of the way: Yes, I said Nashville Tennesee. The Buckle of the Bible Belt. The Protestant Vatican. The Athens of the South. The Hot Chicken Capital. Yes, the self-proclaimed Music City is perennially associated with Country music, Gospel music and, to a lesser extent, contemporary Christian Rock. There is a Jazz scene. There are active Barbershop groups. The city is the home of the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Hee Haw was shot there. It is a city that, until a few decades ago, still had strong ties to the Confederacy.
How the hell did a Stoner Rock band start there?
Quickly, that’s how.
The band were officially formed in February of 2012 (remember when that year was supposed to be the end of the world? C’mon, Mayans, if you really meant 2020 why didn’t you just say 2020?) and released their first album, Our Mother Electricity, on December 6th, 2012. Being from Nashville, the album was of course released on the German heavy psych label Elektrohasch Schallplatten. So just so we’re clear: Stoner Rock was born in the California Desert and then adopted by a band from Tennessee and released on a German label. I just have one question: Where the fuck is Carmen Sandiego?
To be fair, All Them Witches characterized their debut sound as being ‘psychedelta rock’...which kinda sounds like a knock off version of an X-Man. The album is full of heavy jams. Listeners can expect to hear the influence of the blues mixed with deep fuzz and highly compressed vocals. Until it Unwinds is over eight minutes of rolling swagger that will have you thinking about 50 Million Year Trip. Heavy/Like a Witch has some definite Stone Temple Pilots vibes and is a great opener. The true standout on the album is The Urn, a dark and twisted fable that is really the antithesis of everything one associates with music in the Bible Belt. The album was a declaration of war on everything cheery and pleasant to be found in the Music City, and a bold statement from a band finding its feet.
The band were not entirely happy with the production on Our Mother Electricity. In order to assert themselves, they went ultra low-tech. The released the Extra Pleasant EP in July of 2013. It was recorded on a 4-track cassette tape using only two microphones. Production-wise, it is a step back - but when you listen to it on headphones, you can appreciate the raw talent. It is a weird low-fi follow up and almost like listening to a debut rather than the first album. Listening to this EP is like hearing a Pink Floyd cover band’s first original songs that have been mashed up with Clutch and recorded on an iPhone 4. Even with those limitations, tracks like Sludger will stay with you and are worth your time.
While their first two releases had some modest success, All Them Witches really did not get widespread acclaim until the release of their second full album, Lightning at the Door, in late 2013. Every band that has ever released anything on Bandcamp wants to experience the kind of underground word-of-mouth sensation that this album generated. The album is part-concept, part-thematic and has narrative threads that tie it together (e.g. the two tracks The Marriage of Coyote Woman and The Death of Coyote Woman - clearly, not a happy ending for the titular character). If you loved Songs for the Deaf and Rated R, then this is the album that you are going to want to start with as an introduction to the band. It has some amazing tracks - Funeral for a Great Drunken Bird and When God Comes Back are great on their own - but it is best experienced as a complete album. Do yourself a favor: Find a great set of headphones and listen to it front to back. You’ll thank me.
How do you follow up a concept album that gives you unforeseen popularity and access to a broader audience? Do you, say, create a dark follow-up to it, and find the title for that album in a lyric from a hidden track?
Who the fuck would make a weird choice like that?
All Them Witches took a different route and decided to instead channel their inner Beck. The Effervescent EP came out in June of 2014. There are only two songs, each clocking in at about 25 minutes long. Side A is Effervescent and Side B is Tnecsevreffe. The EP is a Rorschach blot of instrumental music in multiple movements that channels incredible musicality and allows you to superimpose your own meaning on it. It is like listening to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin have a baby, if that baby was raised listening to coyotes howl and instrumental Kyuss tracks all mashed together on one continuous loop. Fans of the German band Mother Engine will hear definite parallels. The weird thing about Effervescent is its length: it is hard to think of it as an EP, because it is 50 minutes of music. But it has only two tracks, so it can’t really be an album...can it?
Yes, before you start in on me, I know about Sleep’s Dopesmoker. That 2003 one-song album may also have influenced our boys from the Hee Haw city.
So after playing around with longer and more intricate multiple-movement songs, it is no surprise that All Them Witches dropped a 57 minute ‘EP’ in 2015. A Sweet Release hit the airwaves on April 20. Yep, 4/20. No, that was not a coincidence. No, I’m not going to explain that to you. If you gotta ask, you’ll never know. Yes, if anyone doubted at all that this band was a Stoner Rock band, fuck all y’all, the release date is proof. Tracks on the EP range in length from almost 2 and a half minutes to over 24 minutes. It is a spacey, laid-back jam that is at times hypnotic and far-reaching, and equally urgent and immersive.
I’m not saying that you need to be high to appreciate this EP. I’m just saying that listening to Interstate Bleach Party and Howdy Hoodee Slank in the right…mood ...can make you see the color Octarine.
Lightning at the Door and Effervescent cemented All Them Witches as true underground masters of Stoner Rock. 2015’s Dying Surfer Meets His Maker saw them broaden their musical scope and refine their sound. The album (yes, it is an album this time) leans heavily into the Blues with layers of grunge and psychedelia and celtic strings and even harmonicas. (Side note: the last time I heard harmonicas used in Stoner Rock was never. So good on them. I will say this: the hook brings you back.) All these influences were mixed in one big bowl and smoked out the top of a giant bong for full effect. It is at the same time a more technical and more mellow album. Stand out tracks on the album are the hard hitting Dirt Preachers and El Centro and This is Where it Falls Apart.
All Them Witches found themselves touring the small club circuit and then playing bigger and bigger stages. They got invited to festivals like Bonnaroo and were greeted by enthusiastic fans (and clouds of fragrant haze). There is nothing like performing live to hone a band’s edge. By the time Sleeping Through the War dropped in 2017, the boys had been together, touring and recording, for five years. The album is tightly crafted by a tight band. There are even guest vocalists to add texture and harmony to the songs. Less mellow than its predecessor, the album roars right from the opening track - Bulls - through to the closing track, Guess I’ll Go Live On The Internet. 3-5-7 is probably one of the best Stoner Rock tracks you will come across. And when you recognize the tonal mirroring of Am I Going Up with Alabaster, you feel smarter than you actually are. Lots of albums have made me bang my head; very few have made me stop and recognize the musical structure that underpins the melody. That is Tool-level composition right there. Long story short: this is an album put out by a band in its prime and it does not disappoint.
If you remember what happened in English class, what follows the apotheosis for the main character is the falling action or denouement. All Them Witches had peaked with Sleeping Through the War and had nowhere to go but down. The 2018 Lost and Found EP was four (comparatively) short covers and remixes that seemed more like leftovers than an actual meal. Sure, leftovers can be tasty, but All Them Witches fans were used to getting new and better breakfasts, luncheons and dinners and instead got last Tuesday’s reheated bean burrito. Which is fine, if you dig burritos, but it is still not as good as a nice, juicy steak.
Goddam, is anyone else craving a meal? Why is it so smoky in here, and why do I want to eat burritos and Doritos?
Hehe. Dorito. Burrito.
Fuck. I need to focus. Moving on.
Any fan of the band could tell that something was up, and that Lost and Found was at best a B-Side. It soon became evident that something really was up. Keyboardist (and part-time violinist) Allan Van Cleave was out of the band. This left a gigantic Ray Manzarek-esque hole in the band’s sound. The breakup was not a good one, and left some scars.
Van Cleave was replaced by Jonathan Draper, and the band released the album ATW in Sept of 2018. Sonically, the album is sound, but seems to lack the spark of greatness that was in everything prior to Lost and Found. The technical skills are there - Draper knows his way around a keyboard, and that is clearly evident on Fishbelly 86 Onions - but it kinda (IMHO) sounds more like an amazing All Them Witches cover album than an actual effort by the band. It is kinda like Bryan Cranston dressing up in a Walter White mask. It is super close to previous efforts but just not the same, somehow. 1st vs. 2nd is a jam and so is Diamond, and the album has an unrelenting energy, but it is just a bit off the mark.
The band must have felt something similar. Draper was turfed from the group just a month after ATW dropped. Instead of trying to recreate the four member sound that had anchored them since John Cusak and Amanda Peet’s landmark film, they decided to choose a new direction entirely.
When bands shuffle their lineup, it tends to be adding members (like our very own ancient monarchs) or replacing members. Very few bands successfully delete members. Well, OK, that band from Liverpool did successfully delete Stuart Sutcliffe from its lineup and they went on to do alright. Genesis made a successful transition from a 4-piece to a 3-piece when Peter Gabriel left. Oasis got 100% better when Liam Gallagher and his ego both quit. But losing an integral part of your sound - and the keyboards were central in so many songs - would be a tough transition. The band’s fanbase-not-so secretly worried that the lack of keyboardist would spell the end. Thankfully, we were wrong.
All Them Witches took that leap. Digging into their nomenclature and lore, they released a single as a three-piece band on Halloween of 2019. 1X1 is an angry, powerful Stoner Rock jam with a video that is an homage to Jesus Christ Pose. It is a Kyuss-meets-Tool-meets-Led Zeppelin-at-a-Black-Sabbath-concert song that made everyone simultaneously applaud and exhale.
They were back.
The new LP Nothing as the Ideal just dropped on September 4th, 2020. It is a leaner, meaner iteration of the band that seems to have lost no momentum. Everything resonates with power. Saturnine and Iron Jaw evokes Tony Iommi riffage. The Children of Coyote Women is a direct callback to the album Lightning at the Door. 41 is a thumping tune and Enemy of my Enemy is a relentless sonic attack. But most importantly, we get to see All Them Witches evolve as a band but hang on to the core of their sound.
You’re never going to hear this band on your local top 40 radio station. You might catch them on College radio, if the DJ is cool enough. Like most great music nowadays, you have to go looking to find it. But when you do find it, what an amazing experience it can be.
So now you have completed your Hero’s Journey (Twist! It turns out that YOU were the hero all along!) According to the trope, you are now older and wiser because you have ventured out of your comfortable little world.
Now prove me right, hero. Go listen and awaken your inner stoner. And bring me some goddamn Doritos. Cool Ranch for the win.

Josh has included All Them Witches on The Alligator Hour and is known to be a fan of the band.
A recent review of Nothing as the Ideal stated that Charles Michael Parks Jr.’s voice was “Fantastic...like a bassier Josh Homme”.
More importantly, All Them Witches are a Stoner Rock band...and Josh literally invented the genre. It is clear that while the band has grown and evolved and are taking themselves to new places, their music has been inspired by that downtuned, low desert Kyuss groove.

2020.09.24 06:28 memesandcommunism LETTER TO REDDIT CEO

Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc– If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act

2020.09.22 04:05 MattBearMusicNZ Matthew Beardsworth - Suite from SINTEL for Full Orchestra (Project)

My name is Matthew Beardsworth, and I am a young composer from Auckland, New Zealand, diagnosed with high-functioning autism & ADHD. I also play piano, violin, viola, guitar, plus a bunch of other instruments.
In 2018 I composed my first film score, a personal “re-score” project set to the Blender animated film ‘Sintel’. The goal I set myself was to write a mimetic, leitmotif-based orchestral score, drawing inspiration from the styles of John Williams, John Powell, and James Horner. To date it is the composition I am most proud of, as it matches (and even exceeds) my initial musical vision for the project.
My project submission to the Reddit Symphony Orchestra is for the full orchestra concert suite I compiled from my film score. The suite has been performed live in concert in New Zealand by the Auckland Symphony Orchestra in August 2019, and in Portland, Oregon by the Tualatin Valley Symphony in February 2020 – as far as I know neither performance was professionally recorded.

Below is the sheet music for this piece. Make sure you grab the right part!

'Suite from SINTEL' Sheet Music

Audio & Click Track

The final date to submit your recordings is December 7th! (I'd ideally be aiming for a release date of December 27th, two years to the day since I completed and uploaded my full Sintel film score.)

Send your final recordings here!
* Please include your Reddit user name, or who you want to be credited as, and instrument in the file name. Thank you!

Notes: * I composed the score & suite intended for a fairly high-level orchestra – there are high notes and frequent playing in most if not all the parts, plus a lot of switching between instruments for the percussion parts. (That being said, the past live performances of this piece have been by community orchestras, and they were able to play the suite proficiently as far as I could tell). Any lines that are too high (or low) can be brought up or down an octave if necessary.
  • I am willing to make additional parts, or edit existing parts if changes are required/requested.
  • Any other questions or feedback - let me know in the comments or via PM here, or DM me on Discord (MattBear8642#3261); I'll try to get back to you ASAP!
Updates:
  • (23/09/20) There are now parts for clarinets in A and trumpets in C in the sheet music dropbox folder. There are also sax parts for any saxophonists interested - soprano sax doubling Oboe 1, alto sax doubling Horn 1, and tenor sax doubling Bassoon 1.
